Circle, the company behind the USDC stablecoin, is gearing up to launch a new system called Gateway, aiming to completely change how USDC moves across different blockchains.
Announced on July 1, Gateway is designed as an infrastructure layer that lets users tap into instant cross-chain USDC liquidity without relying on traditional crypto bridges. Right now, anyone holding USDC on one blockchain can’t easily use it on another without going through bridging processes. That creates headaches for both individuals and businesses, who often have to pre-fund and manage balances separately on every chain they operate on.
Gateway hopes to solve that problem by introducing a non-custodial smart contract system. Users will be able to deposit their USDC into a single, unified balance, which they can then access in real time across any supported network. No more manual asset transfers or the hassle of switching networks.
“Today’s multichain landscape poses fundamental challenges to mainstream adoption,” Circle said in its statement. “Gateway makes it possible to build experiences where access to USDC is truly instant, universal, and chain-agnostic, while users retain full ownership and control of their assets.”
For businesses, Gateway could be a game changer. Instead of keeping separate pots of USDC on different chains, companies could maintain a single balance and tap into it on demand wherever they need liquidity. This might help improve capital efficiency and reduce costs tied to juggling funds across multiple networks.
Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire described Gateway as delivering a “totally seamless crosschain UX for USDC,” and said the timing is perfect as stablecoins are poised for broader mainstream use.
The first testnet launch of Gateway is expected this month, starting with support for Ethereum, Avalanche, and Base. More blockchains are planned down the road.
Meanwhile, Circle has also taken a major regulatory step, filing an application with the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to become a national trust bank. That move would allow Circle to directly manage USDC reserves and offer digital asset custody services to institutional clients.
With Gateway and its push into banking, Circle is clearly setting the stage for the next chapter of stablecoins in the global financial system.
