Cronos (CRO) has broken out of its three-month downtrend after a proposal to establish a Cronos Strategic Reserve sparked renewed investor interest. The Layer 1 blockchain, associated with Crypto.com, is considering reissuing 70 billion CRO tokens that were previously burned in 2021 to create the reserve.
Cronos Strategic Reserve Proposal
According to a March 3 X post, the Cronos team proposed establishing a Cronos Strategic Reserve wallet by restoring the token supply to its original 100 billion CRO. The burning event in 2021, one of the largest in crypto history, reduced the total supply from 100 billion to 30 billion CRO to enhance decentralization efforts ahead of the Cronos mainnet launch.
Under the new proposal, the reserve would be subject to a five-year vesting period and would be used to fund Cronos’ long-term roadmap, including the pursuit of a spot ETF launch by the end of 2025. Voting on the proposal will conclude on March 17, but as of now, it has already received over 99.76% approval from the community.
CRO Price Surges Amid Market Hype
Following the announcement, CRO surged to an intraday high of $0.101, marking a 46% rally from its weekly low. The token’s market capitalization reached $2.5 billion, while its daily trading volume spiked by 773% to over $164 million.
Another key factor contributing to the price surge is Cronos’ statement that the Strategic Reserve would support “America’s ambition to become the World Capital of Crypto.” This statement likely attracted traders’ attention, especially as the broader crypto market was already surging after U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans for a national strategic crypto reserve featuring Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other assets.
Despite the bullish momentum, the proposal has drawn criticism from community members on X, with some voicing concerns that the increased token supply could lead to price dilution.
CRO Price Analysis and Technical Outlook
Technical indicators suggest a mixed outlook for CRO. The token recently broke above the descending trendline formed since December 17, after developing a head-and-shoulders pattern that had previously signaled bearish momentum.
However, key indicators suggest that CRO could still face downward pressure:
- Moving Averages: The 200-day moving average remains above the 50-day MA, signaling that recent price action has been weak and that bearish pressure remains strong.
- Supertrend Indicator & RSI: The Supertrend Indicator is in the red, and the Relative Strength Index (RSI) sits at a neutral 42, indicating that momentum is not strong enough to confirm a full reversal of the bearish trend.
At press time, CRO was trading at $0.084, with positive social sentiment, according to Santiment data. However, if the current hype surrounding the Cronos Strategic Reserve fades, the price action could revert to a bearish trend in the coming days. Traders and investors will closely watch whether the proposal’s final vote and market sentiment continue to support CRO’s upward movement or lead to a retracement.
