A major FBI-led international operation has targeted crypto “pig butchering” scam networks, leading to 276 arrests and the disruption of nine crypto fraud centers linked to large-scale investment scams.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the operation was carried out with support from law enforcement agencies in Dubai, Thailand, and China. The investigation focused on organized fraud groups accused of running fake crypto investment platforms and stealing money from victims across different countries.
Global Operation Targets Crypto Scam Centers
Authorities said Dubai police arrested 275 suspects, while officials in Thailand detained one person. In the United States, prosecutors in the Southern District of California charged three people with wire fraud and money laundering.
The case began from an FBI investigation in San Diego last year. Investigators later connected the suspects to organized scam compounds operating through several entities, including Ko Thet Company, Sanduo Group, and Giant Company.
Officials described these entities as fronts used to run fraud centers and recruit workers into scam operations.
How the Pig Butchering Scams Worked
Pig butchering scams usually begin with long-term emotional or social manipulation. Scammers often build trust with victims over time before introducing fake investment opportunities.
In this case, authorities said victims were encouraged to invest in fake crypto trading platforms. Once the victims transferred their money, the funds were moved through accounts controlled by the scammers.
The money was then allegedly laundered across several crypto wallets to make it harder to trace.
Victims Lost Millions of Dollars
The Justice Department said the investigation has already identified millions of dollars in losses connected to these scam operations.
Victims were located in the United States and other countries. Many were convinced that they were investing in real crypto platforms, but the platforms were controlled by fraud networks.
Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva said overseas fraudsters who target Americans cannot operate without consequences, no matter where they are based.
Law Enforcement Expands Action Against Crypto Fraud
This crackdown follows earlier enforcement efforts by the FBI and Thai authorities. Those actions reportedly led to the freezing of around $580 million in cryptocurrency and the seizure of about 8,000 mobile devices used in scam operations.
Law enforcement agencies are now focusing more heavily on dismantling the infrastructure behind these scams. This includes scam compounds, fake investment platforms, laundering networks, and the devices used to contact victims.
Crypto Fraud Losses Continue to Rise
The crackdown comes as crypto-related fraud losses continue to grow. FBI data showed that crypto fraud losses reached a record $11.3 billion last year.
That figure made up more than half of the $20.9 billion in total internet crime losses tracked by the agency.
The latest operation shows that global law enforcement agencies are increasing pressure on organized crypto fraud networks. It also highlights how pig butchering scams have become one of the most damaging forms of online investment fraud.
