Klarna, the Swedish fintech giant best known for its buy-now-pay-later empire, is making its boldest move yet into crypto. The company has introduced KlarnaUSD, a USD-pegged stablecoin designed to streamline and dramatically reduce the cost of international payments.
The token is already live on the Tempo testnet, a layer-1 blockchain built by Stripe and Paradigm. A full mainnet rollout is scheduled for 2026. KlarnaUSD is being issued via Bridge, Stripe’s stablecoin infrastructure making Klarna the first financial institution to launch a token on the network.
Aiming to Cut Global Payment Costs
Klarna initially plans to use its stablecoin internally to manage cross-border payment flows, which collectively cost businesses around $120 billion a year. By shifting settlement onto blockchain rails, the company hopes to reduce those expenses dramatically.
Once internal trials are complete, Klarna will extend KlarnaUSD to merchants and the broader consumer base. While users won’t be buying sneakers directly in KlarnaUSD right away, the move marks the beginning of what the company calls a broader crypto strategy.
CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski emphasized that blockchain is now “fast, low-cost, secure, and built for scale,” noting that Klarna’s vast network 114 million customers and $112 billion in gross merchandise volume gives it a powerful runway for adoption.
Tempo + Stripe: Payments Built for the Long Term
Tempo, the blockchain powering KlarnaUSD, is part of Stripe’s push into stablecoin infrastructure. Stripe already processes a large share of Klarna’s transactions, and the integration between the two companies gives Klarna a ready-made foundation for global crypto settlement.
Experts say blockchain rails could reduce cross-border settlement costs by up to 90% compared to traditional systems. Nikhil Chandhok from Circle noted that future Klarna users may even link crypto wallets directly into the platform for frictionless international transfers.
Klarna Joins a Growing Corporate Stablecoin Wave
The move comes amid a surge in corporate-backed stablecoins. The stablecoin market now sits at roughly $304 billion, processing more than $27 trillion in annual transaction volume.
With supportive U.S. laws like the GENIUS Act, more major companies including MetaMask, Western Union, and Visa are exploring how digital dollars can reshape payments.
For Klarna, the stablecoin also aligns with its post-IPO strategy. After debuting on the NYSE at a valuation of $1.37 billion, the company has been vocal about integrating crypto into its product ecosystem. Siemiatkowski has even asked the community for input on social media, suggesting that KlarnaUSD is just the beginning.
The Bottom Line
KlarnaUSD won’t replace your debit card tomorrow but it could soon make sending money across borders faster, cheaper, and significantly more efficient. And for one of the world’s largest fintech platforms, this marks the opening chapter of a much bigger blockchain push.
