Ethereum’s next major network upgrade, Pectra, is officially set to go live on May 7, 2025, following a unanimous decision by core developers during a call held on April 3. The upgrade comes after a successful final test run on the Hoodi testnet, marking a key milestone in Ethereum’s roadmap toward improved scalability, security, and usability.
A Combined Upgrade: Electra + Prague
The Pectra upgrade merges two planned upgrades, Electra and Prague, into a single mainnet release. It includes 11 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) designed to address critical technical needs, enhance user experience, and streamline Ethereum’s infrastructure.
One of the most anticipated changes is the introduction of smart accounts through updates to Ethereum wallets. These smart wallets simplify access and make account recovery easier for users who lose credentials, addressing a longstanding issue in crypto usability.
Major Technical Enhancements
Another core component of the upgrade is EIP-7251, which significantly raises the staking cap per validator from 32 ETH to 2,048 ETH. This change is expected to benefit institutional stakers and large holders, allowing them to run fewer validator nodes while maintaining higher capital efficiency.
Additional Pectra highlights include:
- Peer Data Availability Sampling – allows nodes to validate blocks without storing full transaction data, easing hardware demands.
- Verkle Trees – an upgrade to Ethereum’s data storage structure, enabling more efficient and scalable access to blockchain data.
These features position Ethereum for future growth, especially as competition intensifies in the layer-1 blockchain space.
Market Performance Struggles Ahead of Launch
Despite technical progress, Ethereum’s market performance has lagged. As of this writing, ETH is trading at $1,804, following a 45% decline in the first quarter of 2025. Network usage has also weakened. According to DefiLlama, transaction fee revenue dropped from $142 million in January to just $21 million in March, while Ethereum’s burn rate has hit its lowest level since August 2021.
Additionally, despite the deflationary mechanics introduced by EIP-1559, Ethereum’s overall supply has increased by 3% this year, raising concerns among some investors.
Hope for Recovery Post-Pectra
Yet, not all indicators are bearish. In March 2025, Ethereum outperformed both BNB Chain and Solana in decentralized exchange volume, recording over $64 billion, a sign of continued relevance in the DeFi space.
Ethereum developers and community members are optimistic that the Pectra upgrade will reinvigorate the network, attract new users, and restore investor confidence by solving key usability and scalability challenges.
