Latin America’s largest neobank, Nubank, is preparing to take another step into the world of digital assets by exploring stablecoin payments within its credit card system. The move would allow customers to settle transactions using U.S. dollar-pegged tokens, bridging traditional banking with the fast-growing crypto economy.
Stablecoin Pilot Coming Soon
According to local media reports, Nubank will begin testing the feature later this year. While no firm launch date has been announced, the initiative is being spearheaded by Roberto Campos Neto Nubank’s vice-chairman and former governor of Brazil’s central bank.
Campos Neto has emphasized that blockchain technology could help solve one of the banking sector’s biggest challenges: how to support the rapid rise of digital assets without undermining credit markets.
“The main problem is finding a solution in which the bank can take a deposit in the form of a token and carry out a credit operation on top of it,” he said.
Why Stablecoins Matter in Latin America
Stablecoin adoption has been climbing across the region as people look for protection against inflation and currency instability. In countries like Argentina and Venezuela, dollar-backed tokens such as USDT and USDC are increasingly being used as a hedge or even as replacements for local currencies in everyday commerce.
Brazil, Nubank’s home market, has seen stablecoins dominate the majority of crypto transactions, especially for remittances that form a key part of household income. Campos Neto highlighted that while most users initially bought stablecoins as a store of value, usage patterns are starting to evolve toward payments and other financial services.
Not Alone in the Race
Nubank isn’t the only Latin American giant looking into stablecoins. Earlier this year, Itaú Unibanco, Brazil’s largest bank, announced it was developing its own in-house stablecoin. The growing demand for dollar-pegged tokens hasn’t gone unnoticed, and traditional financial institutions are increasingly moving to meet it.
Nubank’s Crypto Journey
Nubank has been steadily expanding its presence in the crypto space since launching digital asset trading in 2022. Today, it serves over 100 million customers across Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia.
In 2023, the bank started offering 4% annual returns on USDC holdings, making it one of the first major banks in the region to fold stablecoin yields into its mainstream app. More recently, it added support for assets like Cardano, Cosmos, Near Protocol, and Algorand, showing a clear intent to broaden its blockchain-based offerings.
What’s Next
If successful, Nubank’s stablecoin credit card pilot could mark a turning point for both the bank and the region’s financial system. By merging the stability of the U.S. dollar with the efficiency of blockchain, Nubank is betting that stablecoins can become more than just a savings tool they could soon power everyday payments across Latin America.
