Hedera has taken a major step toward expanding its decentralized finance ecosystem by integrating Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) through a partnership with BitGo, BiT Global, and LayerZero. The move opens the door for Bitcoin holders to participate in DeFi directly on the Hedera network an upgrade that could accelerate institutional adoption of BTC-powered financial tools.
Wrapped Bitcoin, a 1:1 tokenized version of Bitcoin, allows users to put their BTC to work across lending, trading, yield strategies, and liquidity pools. With more than 126,000 BTC tokenized and a market cap nearing $13 billion, WBTC has long been the dominant bridge for bringing Bitcoin into the DeFi economy. Its arrival on Hedera marks a meaningful expansion of that liquidity.
Why WBTC on Hedera Matters
Hedera, known for its fast, low-cost, and enterprise-focused architecture, plans to use the integration to grow its BTC DeFi ecosystem often referred to as BTCfi. The rollout is powered by LayerZero’s cross-chain infrastructure, with key support from Stargate Finance and SaucerSwap.
These platforms will help ensure seamless movement of WBTC into the Hedera ecosystem, enabling users to deploy their Bitcoin in staking, liquidity pools, and a range of DeFi opportunities.
