Former Australian rugby league star Trent Merrin has been arrested and charged for allegedly stealing AUD $140,000 worth of cryptocurrency through deceptive means. The arrest follows a year-long police investigation into a suspected case of digital asset fraud.
According to a local media report published on November 4, Merrin a well-known former forward for the Kangaroos, New South Wales Blues, and NRL clubs including the St. George Illawarra Dragons and Penrith Panthers faces charges of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception.
Police Seize Electronic Devices During Raid
Authorities allege that Merrin accessed and transferred funds from a 29-year-old man’s crypto wallet without authorization, using deceptive tactics to complete the theft. Police have not yet disclosed the specific methods used or the nature of the relationship between Merrin and the victim.
During a raid at his Barrack Point home, police seized multiple electronic devices, which are now undergoing forensic examination as part of the ongoing investigation.
Merrin was released on conditional bail and is scheduled to appear before Port Kembla Local Court on December 3, according to the report.
From the Field to the Crypto Scene
Merrin, who retired from professional rugby in 2021 after a 15-year career, has since described himself on LinkedIn as a “dedicated entrepreneur and investor with a passion for crypto, blockchain, and the health and wellness industry.”
However, the recent allegations have drawn sharp public scrutiny especially given the growing number of crypto-related fraud cases across Australia.
Australia Steps Up Its Crackdown on Crypto Crime
Merrin’s arrest comes amid Australia’s intensified efforts to combat digital asset fraud and tighten oversight of the cryptocurrency sector.
The Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) has flagged crypto as a “high-risk” factor for money laundering, prompting stricter enforcement actions against digital currency exchanges and virtual asset providers.
In early 2025, AUSTRAC conducted a compliance sweep of over 50 crypto service providers, resulting in 13 suspensions or revocations of licenses. Authorities have also targeted crypto ATMs, citing their use in scams and illicit financial transfers.
To close regulatory gaps, the government recently introduced draft legislation requiring digital asset platforms to obtain an Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL). Violations could result in penalties of up to 10% of annual turnover.
Trent Merrin’s case highlights both the growing intersection between sports figures and cryptocurrency and the increasing legal scrutiny surrounding digital assets in Australia. As authorities continue to tighten the regulatory net, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks tied to unregulated crypto dealings even for high-profile individuals.
