As Valentine’s Day approaches, federal prosecutors are sounding the alarm on a surge in romance scams many of which now involve cryptocurrency payments.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio issued a public warning highlighting how scammers exploit online relationships to extract money from victims, often requesting payment in crypto, gift cards, or wire transfers.
How crypto romance scams work
According to officials, fraudsters typically follow a calculated pattern:
- Create fake profiles using stolen photos
- Claim to work overseas in the military, on oil rigs, or in international business
- Quickly profess deep emotional commitment
- Move conversations from dating apps to private messaging platforms
- Introduce a financial “emergency” or investment opportunity
Over weeks or even months, scammers build trust before requesting money. In many cases, victims are persuaded to send cryptocurrency, which is harder to trace and recover than traditional payments.
“Romance scammers are not looking for love they are looking for money,” U.S. Attorney David M. Toepfer said in the alert. He urged people never to send money to someone they have not met in person.
Red flags to watch for
Authorities highlighted several warning signs:
- Early declarations of love
- Refusal or repeated excuses for not meeting in person
- Requests to move conversations off public platforms
- Sudden financial crises or urgent travel needs
- Demands for payment via cryptocurrency, gift cards, or wire transfers
In some cases, victims are directed to fake crypto investment platforms that display fabricated returns before disappearing once funds are deposited.
Rising losses nationwide
National reports show romance and confidence scams account for billions of dollars in losses annually, with cryptocurrency playing an increasing role in these schemes.
The irreversible nature of crypto transactions makes recovery difficult once funds are sent. Officials say this is precisely why scammers prefer digital assets over traditional banking transfers.
How to protect yourself
Federal prosecutors recommend:
- Verifying identities through video calls and independent searches
- Avoiding financial discussions with online-only contacts
- Never sending crypto, gift cards, or wire transfers to someone you have not met
- Reporting suspicious activity to federal authorities
With digital assets becoming more mainstream, criminals are adapting their tactics. Officials stress that vigilance, skepticism, and slowing down before sending money are the strongest defenses.
As Valentine’s Day approaches, the message from prosecutors is clear: protect your heart and your wallet.
