Veteran Bitcoin critic and prominent gold advocate Peter Schiff is back with another broadside against the crypto sector, this time arguing that silver presents a more rational investment than Bitcoin, which he continues to label as a speculative bubble.
In a June 20 post on X, Schiff claimed that silver offers greater upside potential with lower downside risk compared to Bitcoin. “If anyone is looking for an alternative to gold, it makes no sense to buy Bitcoin when you can buy silver,” he wrote.
From Gold to Silver: Same Criticism, New Metal
Schiff has built a reputation over the years as one of Bitcoin’s most consistent detractors. While he has traditionally promoted gold as the ultimate store of value, his latest remarks put a rare spotlight on silver as a superior alternative not just to Bitcoin but to other asset classes.
His core argument remains the same: Bitcoin, in his view, is “all speculation and no substance.” Schiff has routinely warned that investors will be left holding the bag when market sentiment eventually turns, leading to a collapse in Bitcoin’s price.
“People are foolishly buying Bitcoin instead of silver,” Schiff wrote in a reply to a commenter. “All Bitcoin will do is destroy the fortune of those who buy it.”
Critics Push Back as Bitcoin Outpaces Silver
Unsurprisingly, Schiff’s comments reignited debate across the crypto community. Bitcoin supporters dismissed his analysis as outdated and misinformed, noting that despite years of similar warnings, BTC continues to outperform traditional assets including gold and silver.
In fact, Bitcoin now commands a higher market cap than silver. At the time of writing, Bitcoin ranks 7th among global assets, with a market capitalization of approximately $2.079 trillion. Silver sits just below, in 8th place, with a market cap of roughly $2.007 trillion.
Bitcoin Maintains Ground Despite Pullback
Schiff’s renewed criticism comes during a brief cooling period in Bitcoin’s performance. BTC is currently trading at just over $104,700, down approximately 3.8% from a weekly high of more than $108,000. Nevertheless, the cryptocurrency remains resilient amid broader geopolitical uncertainty and slowing demand momentum, according to recent reports from CryptoQuant.
Institutional Conviction Remains High
Despite Schiff’s bearish views, major institutional players continue to double down on Bitcoin:
- BlackRock recently completed a six-day buying spree totaling $1.4 billion in BTC purchases.
- Semler Scientific, a U.S.-based medtech firm, announced on June 19 that it plans to hold 105,000 BTC by 2027 as part of its aggressive treasury strategy.
- Japan’s Metaplanet surpassed 10,000 BTC in June, reaching its 2025 goal six months early and now targets 210,000 BTC by 2027.
This wave of institutional accumulation signals growing confidence in Bitcoin’s long-term role as a strategic reserve asset, despite recent short-term volatility.
Outlook
While Schiff’s allegiance to precious metals remains unwavering, the market continues to tell a different story. Bitcoin has outpaced silver not only in market capitalization but in adoption, institutional interest, and overall performance. Still, Schiff’s contrarian stance serves as a reminder that skepticism remains a key part of the financial discourse around digital assets.
As crypto and traditional finance continue to converge, only time will tell whether silver’s shine will ever truly rival Bitcoin’s digital dominance.
