In a major step forward for on-chain finance, Securitize has announced a breakthrough integration that allows 24/7 atomic swaps between BlackRock’s BUIDL fund and Ethena’s USDtb stablecoin offering a seamless bridge between traditional financial instruments and decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystems.
The announcement, made on June 18, enables qualified users to instantly convert between tokenized U.S. Treasuries and a yield-bearing stablecoin, unlocking unprecedented flexibility and composability for both institutional and DeFi users.
TradFi Meets DeFi: Programmable Swaps Without Middlemen
The integration leverages a newly deployed liquidity fund smart contract, built by Securitize in partnership with Ethena Labs, and removes the need for off-chain intermediaries. This marks the first time institutional-grade treasuries represented by BlackRock’s USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund (BUIDL) can be programmatically exchanged with a composable dollar (USDtb) in real time, on-chain.
“This is a defining moment for institutional DeFi,” said a Securitize representative. “It gives regulated capital a programmable rail into decentralized strategies without compromising compliance.”
The infrastructure builds on a relationship between Securitize and Ethena that began with the Converge blockchain launch earlier this year.
USDtb: A Stablecoin Rooted in BUIDL
USDtb, Ethena’s stablecoin, currently boasts a circulating supply exceeding $113 million and is primarily backed by BUIDL. The stablecoin has gained traction due to its on-chain yield exposure and high composability, making it a favorite in DeFi strategies that require a stable yet productive dollar substitute.
Initially, up to 90% of USDtb reserves were allocated to BUIDL, though Ethena Labs has since stopped making new allocations. Still, the stablecoin’s structure remains closely tied to the liquidity and health of the BUIDL fund.
New Pathways for Liquidity and Capital Efficiency
By enabling atomic swaps between USDtb and BUIDL, the new smart contract opens new liquidity pathways and investment strategies for:
- Institutional asset managers seeking on-chain yield from U.S. Treasuries
- DeFi participants who need a transparent, yield-bearing stablecoin
- Traders navigating between stable exposure and treasury-backed instruments
The ability to move in and out of U.S. Treasury exposure programmatically, without redemption wait times or centralized bottlenecks, sets a new benchmark in tokenized finance.
Growing Influence of BUIDL in DeFi Infrastructure
BlackRock’s BUIDL fund is rapidly becoming a backbone of crypto-native capital structures:
- Now listed as collateral on Deribit and Crypto.com
- Commands approximately 40% of the $7.3 billion tokenized Treasuries market
- Attracts strong inflows from institutions seeking regulated, yield-bearing digital assets
With audited smart contracts and verified reserves, the fund has emerged as a trusted instrument for both compliance-focused entities and yield-seeking innovators.
Risks and Resilience
While the integration brings massive upside for composability, it also introduces systemic risk, especially given USDtb’s high reserve exposure to BUIDL. Should BUIDL face redemption delays or regulatory restrictions, USDtb could see strain in backing or liquidity.
However, both Securitize and Ethena emphasize transparency, audited reserves, and smart contract enforcement as safeguards designed to manage and mitigate such risks.
A Milestone in Institutional DeFi Convergence
The 24/7 swap functionality between BUIDL and USDtb is more than a technical upgrade it’s a paradigm shift. It signifies a maturing DeFi ecosystem ready to integrate with traditional finance, not just at the user level, but at the infrastructure layer.
As institutions increasingly look to DeFi for programmable, efficient capital deployment, innovations like this will pave the way for a new era of tokenized financial instruments, combining trust, transparency, and liquidity at scale.
