World Liberty Financial, the crypto venture backed by the family of U.S. President Donald Trump, is preparing to step into the global payments arena with a new foreign exchange and remittance platform.
The company announced on Thursday that it plans to launch World Swap, a platform designed to make cross-border money transfers faster and significantly cheaper than traditional banking systems.
A push to disrupt global money transfers
Speaking at the Consensus Web3 event in Hong Kong, co-founder Zak Folkman outlined the company’s ambitions. According to him, trillions of dollars move across borders every year and much of it is subject to hefty fees charged by banks and legacy financial institutions.
“There’s over $7 trillion of money moving around the world from currency to currency, and all of this has been taxed very heavily by the incumbent players,” Folkman said during his presentation.
World Swap aims to reduce those costs by connecting users directly to debit cards and bank accounts globally. The platform will allow users to conduct foreign exchange and remittance transactions without relying on traditional intermediaries.
At the center of the system is the firm’s USD1 stablecoin, which was launched last year as part of World Liberty Financial’s broader decentralized finance strategy.
Built on stablecoin infrastructure
World Liberty Financial has been expanding aggressively in the DeFi space. Folkman noted that its lending platform, World Liberty Markets, has already processed $320 million in loans and over $200 million in borrowings within just four weeks of launch.
By integrating USD1 into World Swap, the company hopes to streamline currency conversion and settlement processes. Stablecoins, which are typically pegged to fiat currencies like the U.S. dollar, are increasingly being used in global transfers because they can settle transactions quickly and at lower cost compared to traditional wire systems.
If successful, World Swap could position World Liberty as a competitor to established remittance providers and cross-border payment giants.
Scrutiny over Trump family ties
However, the expansion is not without controversy.
World Liberty Financial’s links to the Trump family have drawn scrutiny from ethics experts. Previous reporting has indicated that the company’s activities have generated significant revenue for the Trump Organization, including income from foreign entities.
Critics argue that the overlap between the venture’s business interests and U.S. crypto policy particularly with Trump overseeing regulatory direction could create potential conflicts of interest. The White House has rejected those concerns, stating that no conflicts exist.
Despite the scrutiny, the company appears determined to push forward with its global payments ambitions.
Launch timeline still unclear
World Liberty Financial did not provide an official launch date for World Swap, nor did it disclose detailed pricing structures. However, the announcement signals a clear intention to challenge the traditional remittance market, which has long been criticized for high fees and slow settlement times.
With stablecoins playing an increasingly central role in global finance discussions, World Swap could become a key test case for how politically connected crypto ventures navigate both regulatory scrutiny and market competition.
For now, the market will be watching closely.
