Bitcoin derivatives opened the new trading week with a sharp shock, as Bitcoin futures on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange reopened nearly $6,800 lower following January’s heavy sell-off—marking the second-largest CME gap on record.
The move highlights how fragile sentiment remains after a month dominated by liquidations, thinning liquidity, and defensive positioning from institutional traders.
CME futures reopen far below Friday’s close
CME Bitcoin futures opened around $77,730, down sharply from Friday’s close near $84,560. The gap formed after weekend selling in the spot market, which continues to trade around the clock while CME futures remain closed.
Spot Bitcoin was trading in the high-$77,000 range as markets digested January’s losses, which saw BTC fall nearly 10% over the month and settle near $78,600 at the close.
Such gaps are closely watched by traders because they often influence short-term price action, with markets sometimes attempting to “fill” the gap by revisiting the prior close though that outcome is far from guaranteed.
January sell-off reshapes market tone
Bitcoin entered January with strong momentum, opening in the high-$80,000s and pushing toward the mid-to-high $90,000s early in the month. That strength faded by mid-January as selling pressure increased and price action turned choppy.
The final week brought a sharper breakdown. BTC slid from the high-$80,000s and closed January near $78,621, making it one of Bitcoin’s weakest January performances in more than a decade.
According to analysis from The Kobeissi Letter, the late-month drop was driven more by market structure than by macro headlines. Shrinking liquidity combined with excessive leverage led to rapid position closures, resulting in more than $1.3 billion in forced liquidations over just two days.
Analysts split on what the gap means
Some analysts view January’s close as technically damaging. Market analyst PlanB said the monthly chart signaled a broader bearish shift, pointing to the relative strength index slipping below 50 and long-term averages drifting toward the mid-$50,000 range. Based on past cycles, he argued Bitcoin could revisit those levels, though he noted the current downturn may be less severe than prior bear markets.
Others are more constructive. Investor Robert Kiyosaki said on X that he views the recent decline as a buying opportunity and plans to add exposure to Bitcoin, gold, and silver during periods of market stress.
Short-term Bitcoin outlook
From a technical perspective, Bitcoin remains under pressure after failing to hold the $80,000–$82,000 support zone. The drop into the high-$70,000s has broken recent structure and kept the short-term trend pointed lower.
Price is now trading below key moving averages, which are acting as resistance. Any rebound toward the $84,000–$85,000 area may attract selling interest, particularly with the CME gap still open above.
On the downside, support is clustered around $77,000–$78,000. A sustained break below that range could open the door to a deeper move into the low-$70,000s. To stabilize sentiment and ease downside pressure, Bitcoin would need to reclaim the mid-$80,000s on a daily close.
Bottom line
The $6,800 CME gap underscores how quickly sentiment has shifted after January’s sell-off. With liquidity still thin and positioning cautious, Bitcoin remains vulnerable to sharp moves as traders assess whether the gap becomes a magnet or a reminder that the market is still searching for a floor.
