Crypto traders in Hungary woke up to a harsh new reality this month: the government has introduced a strict law that effectively criminalizes many everyday crypto activities and it’s already forcing companies out.
According to Forbes, the law, which took effect on July 1, 2025, targets two major areas:
- “Abuse of crypto assets” by individuals (including regular trading)
- The provision of unauthorized crypto exchange services by companies
Sounds vague? That’s part of the problem.
🚨 Jail Time for Trading?
Under the new law, even basic crypto transactions without official approval could land someone up to 2 years in prison. The penalties get steeper fast:
- Trades over 50 million forints (~$140,000) → Up to 3 years in prison
- Trades over 500 million forints (~$1.4 million) → Up to 5 years
And it doesn’t stop at individuals. Crypto platforms that haven’t been approved under Hungary’s new validation regime could face:
- 3 years in prison for unauthorized operations
- 8 years if handling “particularly large” crypto volumes
🛂 Tight Rules, No Clear Path
Hungary now requires all crypto service providers to go through a state-controlled validation process, which includes:
- Deep origin-of-funds checks
- Wallet ownership verification
- Full KYC and user profiling
Without that approval, any crypto-to-fiat or crypto-to-asset conversion is illegal. And the kicker? There’s still no official rulebook, no list of approved providers, and just 60 days for regulators to figure it out.
In the meantime, companies and users are in limbo stuck between halting operations or risking prosecution.
🏃♂️ Providers Already Heading for the Exits
The local crypto industry isn’t waiting to see how things shake out. Revolut, one of Hungary’s most popular platforms, suspended all crypto services in the country last week with no timeline for return. Others are expected to follow, with many considering relocation to more crypto-friendly EU neighbors like Estonia or Lithuania.
Industry insiders are calling the law devastating for Hungary’s crypto scene, which includes an estimated 500,000 retail users — all of whom are now facing uncertainty.
🌍 What About Binance, Coinbase, or Kraken?
So far, global giants like Binance, Coinbase, and Kraken haven’t made changes to their operations in Hungary. Early reports suggest they’re unlikely to be directly affected at least for now but the situation remains fluid.
🔍 Bottom Line
Hungary’s new crypto crackdown has introduced criminal liability for both casual traders and unregistered platforms, without offering a clear path to compliance. With companies already exiting the market and users left in the dark, the law may do more harm than good especially for a country that had half a million people actively participating in the crypto economy.
Whether this ushers in a new regulatory model or pushes the ecosystem underground remains to be seen.
