A long-dormant Bitcoin wallet has suddenly come back to life, transferring 2,931 BTC worth approximately $188 million after remaining inactive for seven years. The move has drawn the attention of on-chain analysts, as large transactions from early Bitcoin holders are often closely monitored for signs of potential market activity.
Although the transfer does not confirm that the Bitcoin will be sold, it highlights how dormant whale wallets can quickly become a major talking point across the crypto market.
Seven-year-old Bitcoin wallet becomes active
According to blockchain intelligence platform Arkham, the dormant wallet transferred 2,931 BTC from the address “356my” to a new wallet identified as “bc1qn”.
This marks the wallet’s first recorded on-chain transaction since Bitcoin was trading at roughly $6,500, making the transfer one of the largest dormant whale movements in recent months.
With Bitcoin now changing hands around $64,000, blockchain analytics platform Onchain Lens estimates that the wallet owner is sitting on an unrealized gain of nearly 10 times the original investment value.
Whale activity continues to dominate Bitcoin flows
The latest transaction comes at a time when large Bitcoin holders continue to play a significant role in exchange activity.
According to CryptoQuant, approximately 99% of all Bitcoin deposited to exchanges currently comes from the 10 largest individual transfers, pushing the Exchange Whale Ratio to 0.99.
Historically, elevated whale activity has often been associated with increased selling pressure because large investors are more likely to move funds to exchanges before selling significant amounts of Bitcoin.
While this latest transfer has not been sent directly to an exchange, traders continue monitoring whale movements for any signs that additional supply could enter the market.
Large transfers remain a key market indicator
Data from CoinGlass classifies Bitcoin transfers worth $10 million or more as whale transactions.
These large transfers have dominated exchange inflows in recent months, making them an important metric for traders assessing short-term market sentiment.
At the same time, institutional demand has shown mixed signals.
According to Farside Investors, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted $197 million in net inflows during the week ending Friday. However, June recorded a record $4.51 billion in net outflows, reflecting weaker institutional demand during the month.
Dormant wallets continue to attract attention
Older Bitcoin wallets are closely watched because many belong to early miners, long-term investors, or entities linked to historic events in Bitcoin’s history.
Earlier this year, another dormant whale permanently destroyed 107 BTC, worth around $8.3 million, by sending the coins to an unrecoverable burn address after remaining inactive for nearly 11 years.
In another notable case, a Satoshi-era Bitcoin holder transferred 2,650 BTC valued at more than $200 million to trading firms FalconX and Cumberland, while still retaining nearly 6,000 BTC.
Although those transfers did not immediately result in market sales, they generated significant attention because movements from early Bitcoin holders can increase potential selling pressure if the assets eventually reach cryptocurrency exchanges.
Market watches for the next move
At this stage, the latest wallet activity does not necessarily indicate an imminent sale.
Large holders frequently reorganize wallets, improve security, or move assets into new storage addresses without selling their holdings.
Nevertheless, whenever dormant Bitcoin wallets become active after several years, the market pays close attention. If these coins eventually move to exchanges, they could increase available supply and influence short-term price action.
For now, the transfer serves as another reminder that early Bitcoin holders still control significant amounts of the cryptocurrency, and their movements remain an important signal for traders monitoring the market.
