The decentralized economy is making inroads into the freelance job market. SmarTrust, a Web3 platform aiming to rival traditional freelance giants like Upwork, has received funding from the Reactive Network Developer Fund to build a secure, on-chain escrow system tailored for Web3 freelancers and clients.
The new platform is designed to solve long-standing issues of trust, security, and payment reliability in freelance work. Leveraging Reactive Smart Contracts, SmarTrust allows clients to lock funds into multichain escrow contracts, with milestone-based payouts that are automated and transparent.
Trustless Freelancing for a Decentralized Future
SmarTrust operates across multiple EVM-compatible chains, enabling scalable and flexible solutions for decentralized job markets. By removing centralized intermediaries and adding programmable smart contracts, the platform ensures that both parties clients and freelancer can collaborate securely and transparently.
One of its standout features is built-in third-party dispute resolution, which allows adjudicators to step in and resolve conflicts in a decentralized manner. This feature provides the confidence needed for mass adoption in professional, high-stakes freelance environments.
Reactive Network Powers the Backbone
The project is built using Reactive’s event-driven infrastructure, which provides smart contracts with real-time responsiveness and cross-chain logic execution. Emilijus Pranckus, Head of Ecosystem at Reactive Network, emphasized the synergy between SmarTrust’s mission and Reactive’s capabilities.
“SmarTrust is tackling a clear and pressing real-world problem. By placing Reactive at the core of their application, they are enabling trustless mechanisms between clients, freelancers, and adjudicators in a scalable way,” Pranckus said. “This beautifully illustrates the value that a decentralized, events-driven IFTTT network brings to a wide range of smart contract-based applications.”
A Booming Freelance Market Meets Web3
SmarTrust’s mission comes at a time when freelancing is booming globally. According to Statista, the number of freelancers in the U.S. has surged by 90% between 2020 and 2024, and is expected to reach 86.5 million by 2027—more than half of the nation’s labor force.
In parallel, the freelance market’s total value is set to grow from $6.55 billion in 2024 to $14.17 billion by 2029. Much of this growth is driven by demand for agile workforces and the increasing adoption of remote collaboration tools.
SmarTrust’s entry into the Web3 freelancing space is a promising step toward decentralizing the gig economy. With the support of Reactive Network, it aims to bring enhanced transparency, security, and autonomy to millions of independent workers around the globe.
