Germany’s banking sector has taken another decisive step toward mainstream crypto adoption. DZ Bank, the country’s second-largest financial institution, has received regulatory approval from BaFin to launch its long-awaited cryptocurrency trading platform following a year of testing and pilot programs.
The approval was granted under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, marking a major milestone not just for DZ Bank, but for Germany’s broader retail banking landscape.
meinKrypto gets the regulatory green light
The platform, branded as meinKrypto, will allow retail customers of Germany’s cooperative banking network to buy and sell cryptocurrencies directly through their existing banking apps. DZ Bank announced on Jan. 13 that the service is now cleared to operate within the MiCAR regulatory framework.
DZ Bank acts as the central institution for the German Cooperative Financial Network, which includes 672 local banks such as Volksbanken and Raiffeisenbanken. With BaFin’s approval secured, these banks can begin offering crypto trading to customers, although each individual institution must still obtain its own MiCAR notification before going live.
Crypto trading inside everyday banking apps
One of the standout features of meinKrypto is its deep integration with traditional banking services. The crypto wallet is embedded directly into the VR Banking App, meaning customers can invest in digital assets without leaving their familiar banking interface.
At launch, the platform will support four major cryptocurrencies: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and Cardano. The focus on established assets reflects a cautious and compliance-first approach aimed at reducing risk for retail users entering the crypto market.
Custody and trading handled by Stuttgart entities
Custody of customer assets will be managed by Boerse Stuttgart Digital, a regulated subsidiary of the Boerse Stuttgart Group. Actual trading execution will be handled by EUWAX AG, which is wholly owned by Boerse Stuttgart GmbH.
This structure ensures that both custody and trading operations remain within Germany’s tightly regulated financial ecosystem, aligning with MiCAR’s emphasis on consumer protection and transparency.
A move years in the making
DZ Bank’s push into crypto did not happen overnight. Early reports of its retail crypto ambitions surfaced in early 2024, with pilot testing beginning later that year. Westerwald Bank became the first cooperative bank to trial the platform, followed by a gradual rollout to additional institutions.
The groundwork was laid even earlier. In November 2023, DZ Bank launched a crypto custody platform using infrastructure from Metaco, a subsidiary of Ripple, signaling long-term intent to build regulated digital asset services.
German banks steadily warm to crypto
DZ Bank is not alone in embracing digital assets. Other major German institutions have been moving in the same direction. DekaBank, part of the Sparkassen network, launched crypto services last year for institutional clients, while LBBW partnered with Bitpanda in 2024 to provide digital asset custody for corporate and institutional customers.
Together, these moves highlight a broader shift within Germany’s financial system, where crypto is no longer viewed as a fringe experiment but as a regulated asset class suitable for banks and their clients.
With BaFin approval secured and MiCAR now in force, DZ Bank’s meinKrypto platform could become a blueprint for how traditional European banks bring crypto trading safely into the mainstream.
