Zcash surprised investors on Thursday, sliding 7.6% even after what would normally be considered a major regulatory win. The move came after the Zcash Foundation confirmed that the Securities and Exchange Commission has officially closed its investigation into the organization without recommending any enforcement action.
The announcement, shared in a public statement, appeared to remove a long-standing cloud hanging over the privacy-focused project. The SEC probe, which began in August 2023, had examined certain crypto asset offerings linked to the foundation. With the regulator now stepping away, the foundation said it faces no required changes or penalties.
Initially, markets reacted positively. The ZEC token jumped roughly 12% following the news, reversing part of a recent decline. That rally, however, quickly faded. By the next session, Zcash had resumed its downward trend, underscoring a familiar pattern in crypto trading where broader sentiment often outweighs regulatory clarity.
On a weekly basis, ZEC is down about 3.7%, while its monthly performance is nearly flat. Although the token is still up more than 600% year over year, it remains far below its all-time high, reflecting the long-term challenges facing privacy-focused cryptocurrencies.
According to the foundation, the SEC’s inquiry stemmed from a subpoena issued on August 31, 2023, under an investigation titled “In the Matter of Certain Crypto Asset Offerings.” The regulator later informed the organization that it would not pursue enforcement or recommend changes related to the foundation’s activities.
The mixed market response highlights ongoing caution around privacy coins, which continue to face heightened scrutiny despite occasional regulatory wins. Concerns about compliance, exchange listings, and broader risk appetite often weigh more heavily on prices than positive legal developments.
The update also comes amid wider shifts in U.S. crypto regulation under the current administration, including the appointment of Paul Atkins as SEC chair. In recent years, the commission has dropped or scaled back enforcement actions against several major crypto firms, including Coinbase, Robinhood, and Uniswap, according to regulatory filings.
In its statement, the Zcash Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and regulatory compliance, emphasizing that its mission remains focused on building financial infrastructure that protects user privacy. Still, the latest price action suggests that for Zcash, regulatory relief alone may not be enough to overcome persistent market skepticism around privacy-focused digital assets.
