Token Generation Events (TGEs) are often dismissed as hype-driven moments designed to boost visibility or trigger short-term price action. In reality, a well-executed token launch solves structural problems that most Web3 projects cannot address through private fundraising or product development alone.
Research conducted by Formula between 2024 and 2025 suggests that the success of a token launch depends far less on brand recognition or capital raised than on how clearly teams understand the role their token is meant to play.
That disconnect between intention and execution is something Formula sees frequently. According to Jenny Ryan, the firm’s marketing lead, many teams prioritize launch visibility before defining what success actually looks like.
“One of the most common requests we receive is to run PR and marketing campaigns around a TGE,” Ryan said. “But many projects struggle to define what success means in measurable terms. Without that clarity, even a well-funded launch risks becoming nothing more than a listing event.”
Beyond hype, token launches are designed to solve four core challenges: capital formation, activation of utility, signaling project maturity, and reducing risk through transparency.
Turning Attention Into Usable Capital
Capital formation is the most visible outcome of a TGE and the most misunderstood. Many projects raise money before launch through seed or private rounds. The token launch then fulfills those allocations, converting promises into liquid, tradable assets.
In other cases, capital is raised directly during the TGE through public sales or launchpads. These moments reveal whether demand extends beyond early investors and insiders.
Once a token exists, treasury mechanics can finally activate. Protocol fees, bonding curves, and liquidity programs become possible only after launch, allowing value to circulate back into development and growth.

Another key role of a TGE is utility activation. Before launch, a token exists mostly on paper. After a TGE, it begins to perform real functions within the product ecosystem.
That utility may include access rights, fee discounts, staking, rewards, collateral use, or governance participation. Without these roles, a token launch is simply a market listing — not an ecosystem milestone.
This distinction is especially critical for stablecoins. As Reeve Collin noted when discussing STBL, utility determines long-term relevance.
“In today’s market, a stablecoin without real utility or built-in distribution won’t gain traction,” he said. “The incumbents are too large. New stablecoins need a clear ecosystem to serve or a fundamentally different design.”
Formula’s data supports this view. Projects with clearly defined post-launch utility consistently retain users and engagement longer than those driven purely by hype.
Signaling That a Project Is Real and Live
Beyond capital and utility, a TGE acts as a public signal that a project is operational. Until a token goes live, it is difficult for the broader market to evaluate positioning or progress.
Hyperliquid offers a clear example. After two years of self-funded development, the launch of its HYPE token brought the project into wider visibility. The token didn’t create the product it made the product comparable, discoverable, and measurable.
This signaling effect also matters for partnerships. Omar Rahim, commenting on the upcoming Arena Two TGE, described token launches as catalysts for deeper engagement.
“The token launch is the moment when the market can finally interact with what you’ve built,” Rahim said. “It attracts partners and community members who want to engage with something that’s clearly live.”
Reducing Risk Through Transparency
The final problem a TGE helps solve is risk uncertainty. Token launches introduce transparency around ownership, distribution, and concentration. Once live, anyone can see who holds the token, how supply is allocated, and how decentralization evolves over time.
This visibility plays a critical role in trust formation. Market participants can assess risk using real, on-chain data rather than assumptions.
Vitalik Buterin has repeatedly emphasized this principle when discussing blockchain systems, particularly Layer 2 networks. While his comments often focus on technical design, the broader takeaway applies across Web3: transparency reduces uncertainty.
A well-structured TGE makes vesting schedules, unlock timelines, and allocation frameworks public from day one, aligning expectations and limiting speculation around insider risk.
When a TGE Becomes a Strategic Lever
Formula’s research points to a clear conclusion. A token launch is not a shortcut to success but when executed with intent, it becomes a powerful strategic mechanism.
TGEs help projects transition from private development to public participation. They turn interest into capital, theory into utility, invisibility into legitimacy, and uncertainty into measurable risk.
Projects that understand this role treat their token launch not as an endpoint, but as the beginning of a more accountable and transparent phase of growth.
