A 27-year-old Tel Aviv resident has been arrested by Israeli police and the Shin Bet security service for allegedly spying on Israeli public officials on behalf of Iran, reportedly in exchange for cryptocurrency payments. The suspect, Or Beilin, was detained following a covert investigation that revealed ties to Iranian intelligence operatives.
Espionage Funded by Crypto
According to reports by i24 News and Arutz Sheva, Beilin was recruited by Iranian handlers through online channels and was paid thousands of dollars in digital assets to carry out espionage assignments. His tasks allegedly included:
- Secretly photographing the homes of Israeli public officials
- Documenting military installations
- Reporting politically motivated graffiti in public areas
Investigators confirmed that Beilin used encrypted communications to receive instructions and crypto-based compensation from his Iranian contacts.
On June 24, Israeli authorities raided Beilin’s residence, seizing his computer and other digital equipment, which were reportedly used to communicate with foreign operatives and manage his crypto wallets.
Ongoing Investigation and Court Action
The suspect was initially detained under suspicion of collaborating with a foreign enemy and endangering national security. His arrest follows a broader investigation into alleged Iranian infiltration networks within Israel.
The Tel Aviv Magistrate’s Court has extended Beilin’s detention until June 26 to allow further investigation.
In an official statement, Israeli security services warned citizens about the growing threat of foreign recruitment, particularly through social media platforms, where individuals are lured with financial incentives often paid in cryptocurrency to carry out hostile surveillance and intelligence-gathering missions.
Broader Pattern of Crypto-Funded Espionage
Beilin is not the first Israeli citizen implicated in such activities. Authorities recently arrested two additional suspects believed to be working for Iranian intelligence. Among them is 28-year-old Dmitri Cohen, accused of collecting information about the fiancée of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s son. Cohen reportedly earned $500 in crypto per task, amassing several thousand dollars through repeated assignments.
Regional Tensions Fueling Espionage
The arrest comes amid rising tensions between Iran, Israel, and the United States. On June 24, Iran retaliated against recent U.S. airstrikes targeting its nuclear facilities by launching missiles at a U.S. base in Qatar. The attack was successfully intercepted by U.S. defense systems, preventing casualties and calming investor fears.
Following the interception, Bitcoin briefly rebounded above $103,000, reflecting market relief after earlier geopolitical turbulence had pushed prices below the $100K mark.
Authorities Urge Public Vigilance
Israeli police and intelligence agencies are urging citizens to be cautious of suspicious messages or recruitment offers especially those involving cryptocurrency. The authorities stress that digital currencies are increasingly being used by hostile states and terror-linked groups to finance covert operations while evading traditional banking oversight.
