The crypto market is entering an interesting phase as August winds down. While Bitcoin (BTC) is showing signs of fatigue, altcoins are starting to shine, with Ethereum (ETH) leading the charge.
Bitcoin Pulls Back, Ethereum Breaks Higher
After touching its yearly high of $124,457 earlier this month, Bitcoin has since cooled off and is now hovering near $110,000. Over the past week, BTC slipped 0.7%, signaling that investor enthusiasm may be tapering off.
Ethereum, on the other hand, has taken center stage. The second-largest cryptocurrency climbed 8.24% in the same period, breaking above $4,633 and reigniting risk appetite across the market. At one point, ETH hit $4,626 its highest level this year.
Altcoins Benefit From Ethereum’s Strength
Ethereum’s breakout has sparked a rally in other tokens. Solana (SOL) surged 15% this week, with analysts expecting more gains if ETH maintains momentum.
Arthur Azizov, founder of B2 Ventures, explained:
“Looking forward, the setup primarily depends on ETH. If it eventually breaks $5,000, altcoins could have 20–30% upside in September. If ETH keeps stalling in the $4,400–4,900 range, we could expect sideways trading with only catalyst-driven moves. Ultimately, if ETH drops below $4,400, even strong altcoins like XRP and Solana risk having 10–15% drawdowns.”
In short, Ethereum’s next move could set the tone for the entire altcoin market.
Macro Factors Still in Play
The broader financial environment is also weighing on crypto sentiment. According to Ruslan Lienkha, chief of markets at YouHodler, the recent pullback mirrors corrections seen in U.S. equities after they hit record highs this summer.
“The key macro catalysts for crypto heading into September remain U.S. inflation, interest rate policy, and labor market data. The interaction of these factors will largely shape overall risk sentiment and, in turn, the trajectory of both traditional and crypto markets,” said Lienkha.
The Road Ahead
As September approaches, traders will be watching closely:
- If ETH pushes past $5,000, altcoins could extend their rally.
- If ETH consolidates, the market may drift sideways.
- A drop below $4,400 could spark broader declines.
With Bitcoin cooling off, Ethereum and the altcoin sector have a chance to take the spotlight but the path forward may hinge as much on Wall Street and macro data as it does on crypto fundamentals.
