Gnosis Chain has activated a hard fork in an effort to recover $9.4 million in funds that were frozen following the early November exploit of Balancer. The move marks one of the more controversial governance interventions in recent DeFi history, reopening debate around immutability and validator power.
The hard fork went live on December 22, with node operators urged to upgrade immediately to remain aligned with the network and avoid penalties.
Why the Hard Fork Was Activated
The decision followed months of discussion within the Gnosis community after the Balancer exploit, which saw attackers drain roughly $116–128 million across multiple chains. As an immediate response, Gnosis validators implemented an emergency soft fork that blacklisted the attacker’s address.
While the soft fork prevented further movement of funds, it also left $9.4 million frozen on-chain, inaccessible to both the hacker and the affected users. According to Gnosis, a hard fork became the only viable technical option to recover those assets.
Following the upgrade, the frozen funds were forcibly moved from the attacker-controlled wallet to a recovery address governed by the Gnosis DAO.
“The funds are now out of the hacker’s control,” Gnosis said in its official announcement.
Governance Debate Divides the Community
The proposal was initially put forward by Philippe Schommers, Gnosis’s head of infrastructure, who acknowledged the sensitivity of the decision.
In a December 12 forum post, Schommers emphasized that long-term goals still favor censorship-resistant infrastructure, but argued that extraordinary circumstances warranted coordinated action.
“We believe that in due course, validators should not be able to censor transactions and the underlying network infrastructure should be blind,” Schommers wrote, adding that the community must decide how and when such powers should be exercised.
However, not all participants agreed. Several community members warned that altering chain history risks undermining one of blockchain’s core principles.
Critics argued that allowing governance-driven state changes could open the door to future interventions that resemble traditional financial systems rather than decentralized networks.
Validators Required to Upgrade
To ensure the recovery process succeeded, all node operators were required to upgrade their clients and follow the new chain state. Validators who fail to do so risk falling out of consensus and facing penalties.
Gnosis acknowledged that the decision sets a precedent but framed the move as a one-time response to exceptional circumstances rather than a shift in long-term network philosophy.
Broader Recovery Efforts Across DeFi
The Gnosis hard fork is part of a wider set of recovery efforts following the Balancer exploit. Other protocols impacted by related attacks have also managed to reclaim portions of lost funds.
Liquid staking protocol StakeWise recovered approximately $19 million in osETH, while Berachain coordinated with a white-hat hacker to recover $12.8 million. Balancer itself has proposed a reimbursement plan to return roughly $8 million in recovered assets to affected liquidity providers, pending community approval.
Gnosis Chain’s hard fork successfully recovered $9.4 million frozen during the Balancer exploit, but not without controversy. While supporters view the move as a necessary rescue operation, critics warn it weakens blockchain immutability and sets a risky governance precedent. The episode highlights the ongoing tension between decentralization principles and real-world recovery efforts in DeFi.
