Rising economic and geopolitical risks are pushing investors toward safe-haven assets like Bitcoin, gold, and the Swiss franc all of which have seen strong gains this year. Meanwhile, the U.S. dollar is slipping, reflecting growing concerns about America’s economic outlook and political stability.
Why investors are shifting to safe havens
The U.S. economy is flashing signs of stagflation a dangerous mix of slowing growth and rising inflation. Consumer prices rose from 2.4% in June to 2.7% in July, with core CPI (excluding food and energy) climbing to 3.1%.
At the same time, the labor market is cooling. The U.S. added just 22,000 jobs in August, while unemployment jumped to 4.3%, the highest since the pandemic. Economists expect August inflation to come in even higher at 3%, raising the stakes for the Federal Reserve.
Markets are now betting the Fed will cut rates by 0.25% at its upcoming meeting. But easing policy while inflation is still rising risks making the problem worse in the months ahead.
On top of the economic worries, geopolitical tensions are adding fuel to investor anxiety. U.S. trade relations are deteriorating, with reports that India may be aligning more closely with China in response to U.S. tariffs under the Trump administration. Political pressure on the Fed has also intensified, with Trump reportedly considering firing Fed Chair Jerome Powell and recently dismissing Fed governor Lisa Cook in a push for lower rates.
Bitcoin, gold, and the Swiss franc lead the rally
Against this backdrop, safe-haven assets have become the go-to choice:
- Bitcoin: Despite recent pullbacks, BTC is still trading well above its yearly lows. Spot Bitcoin ETFs continue to attract money, with $54 billion in inflows since January 2024.
- Gold: Prices have surged to record highs, supported by large ETF inflows and aggressive central bank buying. China has added to its gold reserves for 11 straight months, bringing holdings to 74 million troy ounces. Analysts at Goldman Sachs now forecast that gold could hit $5,000.
- Swiss franc: The franc has strengthened 13% against the U.S. dollar this year. Investors value Switzerland’s stability, neutrality, and low debt, making the franc one of the world’s most trusted currencies in turbulent times.
Meanwhile, the U.S. dollar index (DXY) has dropped more than 10% from its 2024 peak of 110, now sitting at 97.73.
The bigger picture
With inflation climbing, growth slowing, and political risks rising, investors are hedging their bets with assets seen as more resilient to shocks. Bitcoin, gold, and the Swiss franc are emerging as the winners of this uncertain environment each for different reasons but all tied to the same story: a world searching for stability.
