Tether’s U.S.-regulated stablecoin, USAT, has posted one of the fastest growth rates in the stablecoin market this year. According to its latest reserve report, the token expanded from $22 million to $140.8 million in circulation within a single month a remarkable 540% increase.
Despite that impressive growth, USAT remains only a tiny fraction of Tether’s global stablecoin business. With USDT still holding around $184 billion in circulation, USAT represents just 0.08% of its offshore counterpart, highlighting the enormous gap between Tether’s regulated U.S. strategy and its established global operations.
USAT records rapid early growth
USAT officially launched in January 2026 with an initial supply of $10 million.
Its growth over the following months was steady before accelerating sharply:
- January: $17.6 million
- March: $22 million
- April: $140.8 million
The latest reserve report, signed by Deloitte, confirmed the sharp increase and attributed the expansion to growing institutional demand for regulated dollar-backed digital assets used in treasury management and settlement services.
Although the growth rate is significant, USAT still remains relatively small compared to other regulated stablecoins.
Still far behind major competitors
Even after its rapid expansion, USAT remains well behind the industry’s largest regulated dollar tokens.
Current comparisons show:
- USDC: Approximately $75 billion
- PYUSD: Around $5.5 billion
- RLUSD: Roughly $1.7 billion
- USAT: About $140.8 million
Compared to these competitors, USAT represents:
- Less than 0.2% of USDC’s circulation
- Around 2.5% of PayPal’s PYUSD
- Roughly 8% of Ripple’s RLUSD
Its biggest comparison, however, is with Tether’s own flagship stablecoin.
USDT currently maintains approximately $184 billion in circulation, making USAT only a very small part of the overall Tether ecosystem.
Tether builds a regulated U.S. presence
Unlike USDT, which operates primarily through offshore structures, USAT was specifically created to comply with emerging U.S. stablecoin regulations.
The token is issued by Anchorage Digital Bank, a federally chartered crypto bank operating under U.S. regulatory oversight.
Its reserves are held by Cantor Fitzgerald, while the U.S. business is led by Bo Hines, the former Executive Director of the White House Council of Advisers on Digital Assets.
This structure positions USAT as Tether’s fully regulated U.S. stablecoin while allowing USDT to continue serving international markets.
Stronger transparency than USDT
One notable difference between the two stablecoins is the level of financial disclosure.
USAT publishes reserve reports signed by Deloitte, offering institutional investors an additional layer of transparency.
Meanwhile, USDT continues relying on reserve attestations rather than a full independent audit.
The contrast highlights Tether’s different approaches for its regulated U.S. product and its larger international stablecoin business.
Why Tether launched USAT
Industry observers generally see three possible reasons behind the launch.
Expanding regulated products
USAT gives Tether a compliant stablecoin designed for U.S. financial institutions seeking regulated digital dollar solutions.
Preparing for future regulations
The token also provides Tether with an operational foothold should future U.S. regulations require greater compliance for stablecoin issuers.
Diversifying business risk
Launching a fully regulated product allows the company to reduce regulatory exposure while continuing to operate its much larger global USDT ecosystem.
Although USAT remains relatively small today, its existence provides flexibility if the regulatory landscape changes.
Institutional market remains highly competitive
USAT enters a market already dominated by several established players.
Circle continues leading regulated stablecoins with USDC, while PayPal and Ripple have also expanded their institutional offerings through PYUSD and RLUSD.
Rather than competing directly with USDT’s international user base, USAT appears focused on serving U.S.-based institutions seeking compliant digital dollar products for payments, settlements, and treasury management.
Its future growth will likely depend on adoption by banks, financial institutions, and enterprise customers rather than retail cryptocurrency users.
Outlook
USAT’s rapid 540% monthly growth demonstrates growing institutional interest in regulated stablecoins, but the token remains extremely small compared to Tether’s flagship USDT.
The launch reflects Tether’s broader strategy of maintaining its dominant global stablecoin while simultaneously building a fully compliant U.S. alternative.
Whether USAT evolves into a major institutional stablecoin or remains a specialized regulatory vehicle will largely depend on future U.S. stablecoin legislation, institutional demand, and Tether’s long-term compliance strategy.
