Gate.com has taken a major step toward strengthening its European presence after its Malta-based entity secured a Payment Institution license under the European Union’s PSD2 framework.
The license was granted by the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) to Gate Technology Ltd, the exchange’s Malta subsidiary. This approval allows the company to legally offer regulated payment services across the European Union.
What the PSD2 License Means
The Second Payment Services Directive (PSD2) is a key EU regulatory framework governing electronic payments and financial services.
By obtaining this license, Gate Technology Ltd can:
- Offer compliant payment services within Malta
- Use passporting rights to expand services across EU member states
- Integrate fiat payment infrastructure with Web3 and crypto services
This makes Gate one of the relatively few crypto-native companies in Europe to secure a PSD2 Payment Institution license.
Building Bridges Between Traditional Finance and Web3
Giovanni Cunti, CEO of Gate Technology Ltd, said the approval strengthens the company’s ability to connect traditional finance with blockchain-based systems.
The PSD2 license enables Gate to build regulated payment rails that support:
- Fiat-to-crypto onramps
- Stablecoin-powered payments
- Cross-border digital transactions
With regulatory clarity in place, the company aims to provide compliant services for both institutional and retail clients throughout Europe.
Following MiCA Approval in Malta
This latest milestone builds on Gate’s earlier regulatory success under the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) framework.
The company previously secured a MiCA license in Malta to offer exchange and custody services. Combining MiCA authorization with PSD2 licensing positions Gate as a fully regulated operator across both crypto trading and payment services.
Together, these approvals create a structured pathway for expanding compliant crypto services across the EU.
Expanding a Global Compliance Strategy
Gate reports that its compliance strategy spans multiple jurisdictions, including:
- Malta
- Cyprus
- The Bahamas
- Japan
- Australia
- Dubai
Founded in 2013, Gate.com has grown into one of the largest crypto exchanges globally. The platform reports serving tens of millions of users and ranks among the top exchanges by spot trading volume and liquidity.
Why This Matters for the EU Crypto Market
The PSD2 license allows Gate to scale payment services across the EU through passporting rights — meaning once authorized in Malta, it can operate in other EU countries without obtaining separate licenses in each jurisdiction.
This creates a more seamless expansion strategy for integrating:
- Traditional banking systems
- Crypto exchanges
- Stablecoin infrastructure
- Web3 applications
As Europe continues tightening crypto regulations under MiCA and related frameworks, exchanges that secure early compliance approvals may gain a competitive advantage.
The Bigger Picture
Gate’s PSD2 approval signals a broader industry trend: crypto exchanges are increasingly seeking formal regulatory licenses to expand payment capabilities and integrate with traditional financial systems.
By combining MiCA and PSD2 authorizations, Gate is positioning itself not just as a trading venue but as a regulated financial infrastructure provider within the European Union.
