Netflix has officially announced the lead cast for its highly anticipated limited series based on the dramatic rise and fall of the crypto exchange FTX. The show, titled “The Altruist,” will chronicle the infamous crypto scandal that led to the downfall of FTX and its co-founder, Sam Bankman-Fried, as well as the collapse of Alameda Research under Caroline Ellison.
In a statement shared across its platforms, Netflix confirmed that Anthony Boyle will portray Bankman-Fried, while Julia Garner has been cast as Ellison. The series will span eight episodes and is being produced by Higher Ground, the production company founded by Barack and Michelle Obama.
“The Altruist”: A Story of Ambition, Betrayal, and Billions
Described by Netflix as a gripping tale of idealism gone awry, The Altruist will follow “two hyper-smart young idealists” who set out to “remake the global financial system in the blink of an eye…only to seduce each other into stealing $8 billion.” The show promises a character-driven narrative that explores ambition, moral conflict, and the dark underbelly of decentralized finance.
The casting of Julia Garner, known for her Emmy-winning role in Ozark and acclaimed performances in Inventing Anna and The Get Down, signals a dramatic and emotionally layered portrayal of Caroline Ellison. Anthony Boyle, the rising Northern Irish actor known for his roles in Masters of the Air, Tetris, and Tolkien, brings intensity and complexity to the role of the disgraced FTX founder.
A High-Caliber Creative Team
The show is being co-showrun by Graham Moore, best known for The Imitation Game, and Jacqueline Hoyt, who has worked on The Underground Railroad, Dietland, and The Leftovers. Moore expressed deep personal connection to the story, saying:
“For nearly three years now, Sam and Caroline’s story has been my daily obsession. I’m so grateful to my friends at Netflix and Higher Ground for loving this story not only as much as I do, but in the same way that I do.”
James Ponsoldt, known for The Spectacular Now and Daisy Jones & The Six, is set to direct the series’ pilot. Executive producers Vinnie Malhotra and Jessie Dicovitsky will represent Higher Ground.
Reality vs. Screenplay: Timely Release and Legal Drama
While Netflix has not yet revealed a release date, the show may premiere before Caroline Ellison’s projected release from federal prison. Sentenced to 24 months for her role in the FTX collapse, Ellison is expected to be released in May 2026, according to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.
Meanwhile, Sam Bankman-Fried, originally sentenced to 25 years, may see an early release in just over two decades due to good behavior, program credits, and time served during pre-sentencing detention. That would put him back in the world far sooner than initially expected and possibly with a front-row seat to watch his story unfold on screen.
With powerhouse talent both in front of and behind the camera, The Altruist is shaping up to be a bold dramatization of one of the most scandalous chapters in crypto history. As the streaming giant dives into the world of blockchain fraud, political ambition, and psychological intrigue, viewers can expect a rollercoaster ride through a story that’s stranger and more shocking than fiction.
