Investor confidence in crypto markets has taken another hit as Bitcoin and Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs) saw renewed outflows on October 22, wiping out the previous day’s brief recovery and signaling persistent market hesitation.
Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs Back in the Red
According to data from SoSoValue, Bitcoin ETFs posted $101.3 million in net outflows on October 22, reversing the $477 million inflow seen just a day earlier. Trading activity also weakened, with total volume across Bitcoin ETFs slipping to $6.58 billion, down from $7.4 billion the previous session.
While BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) managed to attract $73.6 million in inflows, this was more than offset by large withdrawals from Fidelity’s FBTC and Grayscale’s GBTC, which each recorded around $56 million in redemptions. Other issuers, including Ark 21Shares (ARKB) and Bitwise (BITB), also saw outflows, underscoring broad-based investor caution.
The reversal extends a week-long stretch of underperformance for BTC-tracking funds. Despite a momentary bounce on October 21, the renewed withdrawals highlight shallow demand and fading momentum in Bitcoin’s price action.
Ethereum ETFs Also See Renewed Withdrawals
The downturn wasn’t limited to Bitcoin. Ethereum ETFs also turned negative, logging $18.8 million in outflows after posting $141.7 million in inflows the previous day.
BlackRock’s ETHA fund stood out as the only product with positive flows, adding $110.7 million, while Grayscale’s ETHE and Ethereum Trust (ETH) led the losses with a combined $80 million in redemptions.
The return to net outflows marks yet another setback for Ethereum-linked products, which have struggled to attract sustained investor interest amid weak price performance and declining institutional appetite.
“The ETF outflows show that institutional traders are still cautious and unwilling to take large positions ahead of key macro data,” said one market analyst. “It’s a wait-and-see mode until risk sentiment improves.”
Bitcoin and Ethereum Prices Under Pressure
At the time of writing, Bitcoin (BTC) was trading around $109,783, up 1.5% in the past 24 hours but still down 2.4% for the week. The modest rebound followed several days of selling that briefly pushed the leading cryptocurrency below $108,000 earlier in the week.
Technically, Bitcoin’s chart continues to show lower highs since early October, suggesting ongoing selling pressure. Analysts say a decisive break above $112,000 would be needed to restore bullish momentum and revive investor confidence.
Meanwhile, Ethereum (ETH) traded near $3,869, up 0.2% daily but down 4.4% for the week. Multiple recovery attempts above $3,900 have failed as low trading volumes and ETF outflows weigh on price momentum.
Market Sentiment Remains Subdued
The combination of ETF outflows, cautious institutional positioning, and muted liquidity has kept the broader crypto market on edge. Total market capitalization remains below recent highs, with traders reluctant to commit capital ahead of major economic events such as the U.S. inflation report and interest rate updates.
For now, both Bitcoin and Ethereum remain locked in narrow ranges, reflecting uncertainty rather than panic. But until ETF inflows stabilize and risk appetite returns, analysts expect sideways trading and limited upside potential in the short term.
