Ethereum is trading just below a key resistance zone as price action cools and a growing share of the network’s supply gets locked into staking, tightening liquid supply and reshaping market dynamics.
At press time, ETH was changing hands around $3,162, down roughly 1.3% on the day. Over the past week, price has ranged between $3,119 and $3,379. While Ethereum has gained about 3.6% over the past month after reclaiming $3,000, it remains well below its August peak near $4,946.
Activity slows as traders turn cautious
Market participation has eased notably. Ethereum’s 24-hour trading volume fell by around 19% to $20 billion, signaling reduced trader engagement at current levels.
Derivatives data from CoinGlass mirrors that slowdown. Futures trading volume dropped more than 22%, while open interest slipped 2% to $40.26 billion. Together, the figures suggest traders are dialing back leverage rather than positioning aggressively for a breakout or breakdown.
Staking reaches all-time high
While price momentum has cooled, Ethereum’s staking trend continues to strengthen. Data shared by Solid Intel on Jan. 20 shows that nearly 30% of all ETH in circulation is now staked, marking a new record for the network.
In total, about 36.2 million ETH, valued near $120 billion, is currently locked in staking. As more ETH enters the system, staking yields have compressed slightly, now hovering between 2.8% and 4%.
Even so, staking inflows remain steady. Queue data shows more than 2.6 million ETH waiting to be staked, while very little is queued to exit, highlighting strong long-term conviction among holders and limited interest in unlocking funds.
Institutional participation appears to be playing a role as well. Firms such as BitMine have continued to expand their staking exposure, reinforcing the view that staking is increasingly seen as a core strategy rather than a short-term yield play.
Ethereum technical outlook
Technically, Ethereum is consolidating just below the $3,350–$3,400 resistance zone, an area that has repeatedly capped recent advances. Price ranges have narrowed, pointing to consolidation rather than a decisive trend.
Bollinger Bands are tightening, a classic sign of declining volatility. While this doesn’t predict direction, such squeezes often precede stronger moves. ETH is also trading near the middle of the bands, which typically reflects sideways conditions.
The broader structure remains constructive. Ethereum is still holding above its 50-day moving average, a level that has attracted buyers during recent pullbacks. Each dip has so far been met with demand at progressively higher levels.
Momentum indicators show moderation rather than weakness. The daily RSI sits just above 50, suggesting buyer hesitation without strong selling pressure.
Key levels to watch
A daily close above $3,400 would likely shift momentum and open the door to a move toward the $3,650–$3,800 zone. On the downside, repeated rejection at resistance could trigger a pullback toward the $3,050–$3,100 area, where buyers have previously stepped in.
For now, Ethereum appears to be in a holding pattern, balancing reduced speculative activity against tightening liquid supply from record staking levels.
