The fight for stablecoin dominance is heating up, and PayPal is making its next big move. On September 25, the payments giant announced a partnership with Spark, a DeFi liquidity platform, to expand liquidity for its PYUSD stablecoin.
The goal: push PYUSD liquidity to $1 billion in the coming weeks, a milestone that would position the token to better compete with industry leaders USDT and USDC.
Spark’s Liquidity Layer in Action
Since PYUSD’s integration with SparkLend, deposits into PYUSD pools have already surpassed $100 million. Spark plans to quickly scale this to $1 billion by tapping into its $8 billion liquidity reserves.
“Predictable access to deep liquidity is what allows stablecoins like PYUSD to scale quickly,” explained Sam MacPherson, co-founder and CEO of Phoenix Labs, a core contributor to Spark. “Spark’s framework proves how DeFi can provide the reliable market foundations that global companies need to bring stablecoins into the mainstream economy.”
Why This Partnership Matters
Spark’s system allows users to put idle reserves to work in stablecoin borrowing markets. For PYUSD, that means deeper integration into DeFi making the stablecoin more useful, liquid, and accessible.
“With total DeFi value approaching $150 billion, platforms like Spark are crucial to advancing DeFi as a cornerstone of the digital economy,” said David Weber, Head of PYUSD Ecosystem at PayPal. “By working together, PYUSD can reach new markets faster while maintaining full compliance and composability from day one.”
Stablecoins on the Rise
The timing of this partnership comes as the broader stablecoin sector sees strong momentum. Total stablecoin supply has grown by $30 billion in the last three months, reaching a record $295 billion, with daily transaction volumes regularly topping $100 billion.
With deep liquidity support from Spark, PayPal hopes PYUSD will carve out a larger share of that market and establish itself as a serious rival to the current stablecoin heavyweights.
