Coinbase is gearing up to launch XRP futures contracts, marking a notable expansion of its derivatives offering. The move follows a formal self-certification filing with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) on April 3, submitted by Coinbase Derivatives LLC under Rule 40.2(a).
If approved, the new cash-settled monthly contracts will debut on April 21 and trade under the symbol XRL. Each futures contract will represent 10,000 XRP, with a notional value of around $20,000, assuming XRP remains near the $2.00 mark.
A Regulated Exposure to a Leading Asset
Announced by Coinbase Institutional, the platform designed for professional and institutional traders, the upcoming product is aimed at offering a regulated, capital-efficient way to gain exposure to XRP — one of the most liquid cryptocurrencies in the market.
Coinbase plans to list three monthly contracts at a time, each margined and USD-settled. Trading will run from 5:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. CT, Sunday through Friday, with a daily one-hour break between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m.
Settlement will be based on the MarketVector Coinbase XRP Benchmark Index, which calculates hourly reference rates using volume-weighted median prices sourced directly from Coinbase’s spot market.
Market Reception and Industry Context
While the announcement is significant for U.S. traders seeking compliant XRP derivatives, the market reaction was muted, with XRP’s price showing little movement. This may reflect the fact that XRP futures are already widely available on international platforms like Binance, OKX, Bybit, and BitMEX.
Still, the regulatory nature of Coinbase’s offering provides a key differentiator. The company confirmed it had consulted with Futures Commission Merchants and other participants, many of whom expressed support for the product.
Coinbase in Broader Context
The XRP futures push comes as Coinbase continues to enhance its institutional services. Recently, it open-sourced its multi-party computation (MPC) cryptography library, aiming to boost security and decentralization. The tool, now available on GitHub, enables developers to sign blockchain transactions without exposing private keys.
These product rollouts arrive at a challenging time for the exchange. Coinbase (NASDAQ: COIN) saw its stock plummet 31% in Q1 2025, its worst quarterly performance since the FTX collapse, due to reduced crypto trading volumes. In the past week alone, COIN has slipped over 8%, according to Google Finance.
