The price of Sui (SUI) took a sharp dip on August 5, sliding 4.71% in 24 hours to trade at $3.39, down from a daily high of $3.61. That drop outpaced the broader crypto market’s modest 1.57% decline and also topped losses seen in major altcoins like Ethereum and Solana, which fell under 3%.
This steeper selloff wasn’t random it followed a $162 million token unlock on August 1, the largest in Sui’s history. Combined with weakening market sentiment and a growing preference for safer assets like Bitcoin, it’s clear traders are becoming more cautious.
Token Unlock Adds Fuel to the Fire
The August 1 unlock flooded the market with tens of millions of new SUI tokens, amplifying selling pressure just as macroeconomic uncertainty was heating up. While Sui’s fundamentals remain strong, the sudden supply increase hit at a time when many traders were already reducing exposure to riskier altcoins.
