Daylight Energy is making a bold bet: the future of the power grid isn’t just about better hardware it’s about better financial incentives. The company has raised $75 million to expand its decentralized energy network, which uses crypto economics to reward homeowners for stabilizing the grid.
According to a press release issued on Oct. 15, the funding round includes $15 million in equity led by Framework Ventures, with participation from a16z crypto, Coinbase Ventures, and others. Additionally, Daylight secured a $60 million project financing facility managed by Turtle Hill Capital.
Using Crypto to Reinvent Home Energy
Daylight’s core idea is simple but ambitious: connect thousands of home solar panels and battery systems into a decentralized network that operates like a virtual power plant.
By layering DeFi-style incentives on top of traditional solar installations, homeowners can earn rewards for contributing stored energy back to the grid during moments of peak demand. This brings two major benefits:
- Lower energy costs through predictable monthly subscription fees.
- Extra revenue for households as the network monetizes grid services.
In doing so, Daylight aims to fix two long-standing problems in the U.S. energy system: the high cost of residential solar adoption and the growing strain on centralized power utilities.
Fixing a Broken Solar Model
The company points out that 60% of residential solar costs are burned on sales and customer acquisition a structural inefficiency that slows adoption and limits homeowner savings.
At the same time, traditional utilities are struggling to build new power plants fast enough to keep up with rising electricity demand. Daylight’s decentralized model helps solve both issues by:
- Cutting solar installation costs through direct incentives
- Aggregating thousands of home batteries into a shared resource
- Selling that power back to the grid when prices spike
This dual-stream revenue model makes home energy systems more valuable, turning everyday houses into active participants in the grid’s stability.
Crypto Aligns Incentives Across the Network
Daylight says crypto plays a key role in rewarding households fairly and transparently.
“Crypto is uniquely good at doing those two things aligning incentives and driving down costs,” said CEO Jason Badeaux. “It lets us rebuild this industry on transparency, ownership, and shared economic upside.”
The company is already piloting its model in Illinois and Massachusetts, working through its own customer pipeline as well as partnerships with local solar providers. The new funding will accelerate the rollout of DeFi-based financing, a move that could connect home energy systems directly to global capital markets.
With this infusion of capital, Daylight aims to scale its virtual power plant and bring crypto-enabled energy economics to households nationwide.
