HashKey Cloud has officially joined Stacks’ Bitcoin staking initiative as a launch partner, becoming both a Genesis Bond participant and an operator in the sBTC signer network.
The collaboration marks another step toward expanding Bitcoin-based yield opportunities for institutional users while maintaining Bitcoin’s core security model.
HashKey Cloud announced the partnership on September 7, becoming part of the first group supporting Stacks’ new self-custodial Bitcoin staking system.
The company will participate in two important areas:

- Helping secure sBTC transactions as part of the signer network
HashKey Cloud Becomes Part of Stacks Genesis Bond Program
The first institutional Genesis Bond cohort is expected to launch around September 10, according to Stacks developers.
The program is designed to allow Bitcoin holders to earn BTC-denominated rewards without transferring their Bitcoin to a centralized platform.
Unlike traditional crypto staking services that often require users to deposit assets with third-party providers, Stacks’ approach keeps Bitcoin under the user’s control through a self-custodial model.
Bitcoin committed to the Genesis Bond remains locked on the Bitcoin blockchain, allowing transactions to remain visible and verifiable.
However, the term “Bitcoin staking” requires some clarification.
Bitcoin itself does not use proof-of-stake and cannot be staked through its native network. Instead, Stacks uses its own Proof of Transfer (PoX) mechanism, where participants commit Bitcoin while interacting with the Stacks ecosystem.

Stacks’ Protocol Bond system connects two separate commitments:
- Bitcoin is timelocked on the Bitcoin network
- A corresponding amount of STX is locked on Stacks
The two assets work together throughout the bonding period.
According to Stacks documentation, a Protocol Bond lasts approximately six months, covering 12 Stacks reward cycles.
During this period:
- Bitcoin remains controlled by the participant’s wallet keys

sBTC is designed as a Bitcoin-backed asset within the Stacks ecosystem, allowing users to use Bitcoin liquidity in Stacks applications while maintaining a connection to the underlying BTC.
The signer network plays a key role in managing Bitcoin deposits and withdrawals.
Instead of allowing one company to control transactions, signers work together using a threshold-based approval system.
This means no individual signer can independently move the Bitcoin backing sBTC.
The system requires approval from multiple participating signers before completing important operations.
HashKey Cloud Expands Institutional Infrastructure Role
HashKey Cloud operates under HashKey Holding Limited and provides blockchain infrastructure services across multiple networks.
The company stated that its infrastructure supports more than 40 blockchain networks globally.
Stacks also reported that HashKey Cloud manages approximately HK$29 billion in staked assets, although these figures were provided by the companies and were not independently audited.
By joining the Stacks ecosystem, HashKey Cloud adds another institutional infrastructure provider to Bitcoin-related staking and custody solutions.
Bitcoin Staking Does Not Change Bitcoin’s Consensus Rules
Although the initiative is often described as Bitcoin staking, it does not modify Bitcoin’s proof-of-work system.
Stacks operates separately from Bitcoin’s base layer.
