BitGo has selected Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol as the exclusive infrastructure provider for cross-chain Wrapped Bitcoin transfers, replacing LayerZero.
The change affects the WBTC ecosystem, which is valued at roughly $7.3 billion to $7.4 billion. BitGo said the new arrangement will allow it to expand WBTC across blockchain networks while retaining control over token contracts, transfer limits and other important security settings.
The migration also strengthens Chainlink CCIP’s position in the cross-chain market following a series of similar moves by major cryptocurrency projects.
BitGo Selects Chainlink CCIP for WBTC
BitGo will use Chainlink CCIP to support the transfer of Wrapped Bitcoin between compatible blockchain networks.
WBTC is a tokenized version of Bitcoin that allows BTC liquidity to be used within decentralized finance applications and smart-contract platforms such as Ethereum.
Each WBTC token is designed to represent Bitcoin held in custody. This structure allows users to access lending, trading, liquidity and other DeFi services without selling their underlying Bitcoin exposure.
Because WBTC is one of the largest tokenized Bitcoin products, changing its cross-chain infrastructure represents a significant development for the broader decentralized finance market.
Chainlink Replaces LayerZero as Exclusive Provider
BitGo previously used LayerZero infrastructure to expand Wrapped Bitcoin onto networks including Avalanche and BNB Chain.
Under the earlier system, cross-chain transfers required approval from BitGo’s own verifier as well as either LayerZero or Polyhedra.
The company has now chosen Chainlink CCIP as WBTC’s exclusive cross-chain provider.
According to BitGo, the migration will standardize Wrapped Bitcoin deployments around Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Token standard, also known as CCT.
BitGo also plans to use CCIP by default for future digital assets it issues, suggesting that the partnership could extend beyond WBTC.
BitGo Retains Control Over Token Settings
One of the main reasons behind the transition appears to be operational control.
Under Chainlink’s CCT model, BitGo can continue managing WBTC token contracts rather than handing full control to an external bridge operator.
The company will also be able to configure transfer rate limits and adjust cross-chain settings directly.
Transfer limits can serve as an important security measure because they restrict how much value can move between networks within a certain period. In the event of suspicious activity or a technical issue, these controls may help limit potential losses.
BitGo said the structure allows it to simplify cross-chain deployment while keeping direct oversight of key operational decisions.
WBTC Is the Largest Tokenized Bitcoin Asset
Wrapped Bitcoin remains the largest blockchain-based representation of Bitcoin used outside the native Bitcoin network.
Its market capitalization stood at approximately $7.4 billion at the time covered by the report.
WBTC is commonly used in decentralized exchanges, lending protocols, liquidity pools and collateralized borrowing applications.
Its large size means that any change to its bridge or interoperability infrastructure can affect a wide range of users and DeFi platforms.
The migration is therefore one of the largest cross-chain infrastructure changes announced during 2026.
Chainlink CCIP Gains Momentum After Other Migrations
BitGo’s decision follows several other projects that announced plans to move cross-chain infrastructure from LayerZero to Chainlink CCIP.
The reported total value covered by publicly announced migrations has now reached approximately $14.6 billion.
Projects linked to previous migration announcements include Mantle, Lombard, Aave and Kraken.
The growing list indicates that more companies are reviewing how their assets move between blockchain networks and how much control they maintain over token contracts and bridge settings.
Chainlink’s directory already shows CCIP-enabled WBTC pools on Ethereum and Ronin.
However, neither BitGo nor Chainlink has provided a complete timeline for deploying the new system across every supported network.
Migration Follows Major Cross-Chain Exploit
The broader shift toward Chainlink CCIP followed a reported $292 million exploit involving a LayerZero-powered bridge connected to Kelp DAO earlier in 2026.
Cross-chain bridges are frequent targets for hackers because they often control or facilitate the transfer of large amounts of cryptocurrency across several networks.
A weakness in a bridge’s contracts, verification process or operational controls can expose significant amounts of user funds.
Following the Kelp DAO incident, several projects began reassessing their existing interoperability providers.
BitGo did not directly state that the exploit was the only reason for replacing LayerZero, but the migration comes during a period of heightened concern over cross-chain security.
Existing WBTC Holders Are Not Expected to Take Action
BitGo did not announce any major changes for people who already hold Wrapped Bitcoin.
The migration concerns the infrastructure used to transfer WBTC between blockchain networks rather than the basic structure of the token itself.
Existing holders are therefore not expected to exchange or redeem their tokens solely because of the change.
However, users moving WBTC across different networks may eventually interact with Chainlink CCIP once the migration is fully deployed.
BitGo has not yet disclosed whether all current LayerZero-based WBTC deployments will move at the same time or whether the rollout will take place in phases.
BitGo Expands Institutional Crypto Services
The WBTC migration comes as BitGo continues expanding its infrastructure for institutional digital asset clients.
The company recently introduced BitGo Link, a treasury management platform designed to help businesses monitor and move cryptocurrency across custody accounts and connected exchanges.
The service provides a single dashboard for managing assets held across multiple venues.
Transfers are processed through BitGo’s Policy Engine, which allows institutions to apply internal approval procedures, permissions and risk controls.
This can help treasury teams manage capital without giving every employee unrestricted authority over company funds.
BitGo Link Connects Custody and Exchanges
BitGo Link expands the company’s services beyond traditional qualified custody.
Institutional clients often hold assets across multiple exchanges, custodians and trading platforms. Managing those balances can involve separate accounts, approval systems and operational processes.
BitGo’s platform aims to bring these activities into a single management environment.
It complements the company’s existing Go Network and BitGo Prime services by helping clients track capital distributed across external venues.
The platform also allows firms to apply consistent internal rules when moving funds between connected accounts.
Company Adds Quantum-Risk Protection Tools
BitGo has also introduced new tools designed to help institutional Bitcoin holders prepare for potential risks from future quantum computers.
The company launched four quantum-risk management features for supported Bitcoin multisignature wallets.
These tools include a Quantum Risk Score, a process for addressing exposed Bitcoin addresses, revised unspent transaction output selection and new default address controls.
Bitcoin addresses may become more vulnerable once their public keys are exposed through outgoing transactions. Powerful quantum computers could theoretically use exposed public keys to calculate corresponding private keys.
Practical attacks of this type are not currently considered an immediate threat, but BitGo’s tools are intended to help institutions measure and reduce long-term exposure.
BitGo Expands Controlled Access to DeFi
Earlier in the year, BitGo also expanded institutional access to decentralized finance platforms such as Aave, Spark and Tesseract.
These services allow approved clients to interact with DeFi protocols while maintaining stronger custody controls and internal approval requirements.
Institutional investors often want access to decentralized markets but may be unable to use standard wallets because of regulatory, security or governance obligations.
BitGo’s strategy appears focused on connecting qualified custody with trading, settlement, treasury management and decentralized finance.
The WBTC migration supports this approach by updating one of the company’s most important cross-chain products while preserving direct oversight.
Cross-Chain Security Remains a Major Challenge
Moving cryptocurrency between different blockchain networks remains one of the most technically difficult areas of the digital asset industry.
Blockchains do not automatically communicate with one another. Cross-chain protocols must verify that assets were locked, burned or transferred correctly before corresponding tokens are released on another network.

BitGo and Chainlink have not confirmed when the transition will be completed across all WBTC-supported blockchains.
The companies also did not disclose whether additional BitGo-issued assets currently using LayerZero will migrate to CCIP.
Future changes may depend on network compatibility, technical testing and the availability of Chainlink infrastructure on each blockchain.
Until more details are released, WBTC users may encounter different cross-chain systems depending on which network they use.
