A pro crypto political action committee is preparing to make a significant move in the Texas Democratic primary. Protect Progress, a federal super PAC affiliated with Fairshake, announced plans to spend 1.5 million dollars next month to oppose Al Green.
The spending will focus on advertising and voter outreach in an effort to unseat the longtime congressman, who has represented his Houston area district since 2005 and currently serves on the House Financial Services Committee.
Why Crypto Groups Are Targeting Green
Protect Progress cited Green’s voting record on several major digital asset bills as the reason for the campaign. According to the PAC, Green opposed the Financial Innovation and Technology for the 21st Century Act, the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, and the GENIUS stablecoin bill.
The group also criticized his support for the SEC’s Staff Accounting Bulletin 121, which placed restrictions on how banks can custody digital assets. Crypto advocates have argued that such measures limit innovation and discourage traditional financial institutions from engaging with blockchain based services.
Fairshake spokesperson Josh Vlasto said Green’s stance represents an attempt to block American innovation at a time when other lawmakers are pushing for clearer crypto regulations.
Green’s Position on Crypto
Green has consistently expressed skepticism toward cryptocurrencies. In public remarks and hearings, he has warned that digital assets could pose risks to the US dollar’s global dominance and raise economic and environmental concerns.
During a House hearing last year, he dismissed claims that regulators pressured banks to sever ties with crypto firms, calling allegations of so called Operation Choke Point 2.0 a made up narrative.
Now running in a reshaped district following Texas redistricting, Green faces Democratic challenger Christian Menefee, who has received more favorable assessments from crypto advocacy groups.
Fairshake’s Growing Political War Chest
The planned 1.5 million dollar spend reflects a broader trend of increased crypto industry involvement in US politics. Fairshake and its affiliated committees reportedly control around 193 million dollars in cash, according to federal filings.
Major industry players including Coinbase, Ripple, and Andreessen Horowitz have contributed to the group’s funding efforts.
With substantial financial backing, crypto aligned PACs are positioning themselves as influential players in the 2026 election cycle. Their strategy is clear. Support candidates who favor digital asset regulation and innovation, and challenge lawmakers viewed as hostile to the industry.
A Sign of Deeper Crypto Lobbying
The move against Green signals that digital asset policy is becoming a central issue in US electoral politics. As Congress debates market structure, stablecoin regulation, and custody rules, the crypto industry appears ready to invest heavily to shape outcomes.
Whether the spending will be enough to shift the Texas primary remains to be seen. However, the campaign underscores how crypto has evolved from a niche financial sector into a powerful political force with the resources to influence national races.
