Ethereum staking data is under scrutiny after conflicting reports suggested that more than half of the total ETH supply is now staked. While one analytics firm says staking has crossed the symbolic 50 percent mark, others argue that the real figure is much lower.
The debate centers on how staking data is calculated and what truly counts as active stake securing the network.
The 50 Percent Headline
On chain analytics platform Santiment recently reported that 50.18 percent of Ethereum’s total supply is now recorded in the staking deposit contract. According to its analysis, roughly 80 million ETH has been deposited, marking the first time staking appears to have crossed the 50 percent threshold.
On the surface, this milestone suggests that more than half of Ethereum’s supply is locked up in staking, reinforcing the idea of strong long term network commitment and reduced circulating liquidity.
However, not all analysts agree with that interpretation.
Why Some Analysts Dispute the Figure
CoinShares researchers have challenged the 50 percent claim, calling it inaccurate or materially misleading. According to senior research fellow Luke Nolan, the Ethereum staking deposit contract only records deposits. It does not account for withdrawals.
This distinction is critical.
The deposit contract accumulates every ETH deposit made for staking since launch. But if validators later withdraw or exit staking, those withdrawals are not reflected in the cumulative deposit total. As a result, the headline number can appear inflated compared to the actual amount currently securing the network.
In other words, the 80 million ETH figure represents historical deposits, not necessarily active validators contributing to network security.
What Is the Active Staking Rate
Using validator data from sources such as Ethplorer and CryptoQuant, CoinShares estimates that active staking stands closer to 37 million ETH. That translates to roughly 30.8 percent of Ethereum’s circulating supply.
Other market analysts have echoed similar estimates, suggesting that the realistic staking rate is near 30 percent rather than 50 percent.
This lower number still represents a substantial portion of the supply. But it paints a different picture from the headline claim that half of all ETH is currently staked.
Why the Difference Matters
The distinction between total deposits and active stake has real implications.
Staking levels influence perceptions of network security, decentralization, and supply dynamics. Higher staking rates can reduce liquid supply, potentially impacting price behavior. They also serve as a signal of validator confidence in the network.
If investors believe that 50 percent of ETH is actively locked, they may interpret that as a stronger commitment to long term holding than if the true active rate is closer to 30 percent.
Clarity in data reporting is therefore essential, especially as Ethereum continues to evolve its staking model and attract institutional interest.
A Reminder About On Chain Metrics
The disagreement highlights a broader lesson in crypto markets. On chain metrics often require careful interpretation. Raw contract data does not always tell the full story.
As Ethereum’s staking ecosystem matures, analysts will likely refine how they calculate and present these figures. For now, the 50 percent milestone may be symbolic, but active staking appears to remain closer to one third of the supply.
Even at around 30 percent, Ethereum maintains one of the largest staking ecosystems in the digital asset space. The key question is not just how much ETH has ever been deposited, but how much is actively securing the network today.
