Aave’s new institutional lending platform, Horizon, is off to a strong start. Just a few days after going live, the platform has already attracted more than $50 million in deposits, signaling rising institutional appetite for tokenized assets and on-chain credit markets.
Strong Start for Deposits, Borrowing Still Modest
According to live market data, most deposits so far have come in RLUSD ($26.1 million) and USDC ($8 million). Borrowing activity is still relatively small at $6.2 million, with nearly all loans taken out in USDC. Other supported assets, including Aave’s native GHO, tokenized U.S. Treasuries, and collateralized loan obligations, haven’t yet gained much traction on the borrowing side.
How Horizon Works
Horizon is designed with a segregated pool system. One set of pools handles tokenized real-world assets (RWAs), while another manages stablecoin liquidity. Here’s the breakdown:
- Qualified institutions: Vetted and permissioned users can deposit tokenized assets such as USTB/USCC from Superstate or JTRSY/JAAA from Centrifuge into the RWA pools. These assets then serve as collateral.
- Borrowing: Using that collateral, institutions can borrow stablecoins like USDC, RLUSD, or GHO. Ethena’s synthetic yield-bearing stablecoin, USDt-b, is also on the roadmap.
- Liquidity providers: On the other side, everyday DeFi users and funds can supply stablecoins into the liquidity pools. They don’t need special permissions and earn yield when institutions borrow.
The result is a two-sided market where regulated entities bring institutional-grade collateral, and the DeFi community provides stablecoin liquidity, blending traditional finance with decentralized infrastructure.
Why It Matters
While borrowing demand is still ramping up, the pace of deposits underscores growing confidence in on-chain credit solutions. For institutions looking for compliant, scalable ways to engage with RWAs, Horizon could become a key player bridging the gap between traditional assets and the DeFi liquidity layer.
