Hyperliquid (HYPE) is facing its biggest test in months after a sharp correction erased a large portion of its recent gains. Following a record-breaking rally that pushed the token to new all-time highs, a wave of whale selling and liquidations has shifted market sentiment, placing key support levels under pressure.
The selloff has also triggered Hyperliquid’s first major bearish technical signals since its breakout rally began earlier this year, raising questions about whether the token could decline toward the psychologically important $50 level.
HYPE Drops from Record Highs
Hyperliquid surged to an all-time high of $75.48 before experiencing a rapid reversal that pushed the token down toward the $58 region.
By June 5, HYPE was trading near $62, representing a decline of more than 17% from its peak within a matter of hours.
Although buyers stepped in near the lows to stabilize the price, overall market sentiment remains fragile as traders reassess the strength of the recent uptrend.
The decline marks one of the largest pullbacks since Hyperliquid’s breakout rally accelerated earlier this year.
Arthur Hayes Sparks Selling Pressure
One of the biggest catalysts behind the selloff was the decision by Arthur Hayes to liquidate his entire HYPE position.
On-chain data showed Hayes sold approximately 247,334 HYPE tokens, representing a position worth roughly $18 million.
The move surprised many market participants because Hayes had previously been one of Hyperliquid’s most vocal supporters. Earlier this year, he publicly projected a long-term price target of $150 and even placed a high-profile wager tied to the token’s future performance.
His sudden exit triggered a broader wave of profit-taking among traders and whales.
Additional reports linked prominent market participants such as Andrew Kang and Andreas Brekken to sizable reductions in exposure, adding further selling pressure.
As large holders exited positions simultaneously, spot demand struggled to absorb the supply, accelerating the decline.
Macro Concerns Add to Market Anxiety
Hayes cited several broader market risks behind his decision.
According to his public comments, concerns included:
- Rising oil prices driven by Middle East tensions
- Liquidity demands from major artificial intelligence IPOs
- Potential weakness across global financial markets
- Reduced appetite for risk assets
Despite selling his position, Hayes emphasized that he remains bullish on Hyperliquid over the long term and continues to believe HYPE could outperform several major cryptocurrencies by year-end.
However, short-term traders focused more on the immediate impact of his sale than his longer-term outlook.
Derivatives Markets Increase Volatility
The selloff also highlighted the risks associated with leveraged trading.
One notable example involved the trader known as “loracle.hl,” who had previously suffered substantial losses while shorting HYPE.
After switching to a long position, the trader reportedly faced another significant unrealized loss during the latest decline.
The situation underscores how rapidly sentiment and leverage can shift in highly volatile markets, with both bulls and bears facing liquidation risk during sharp price movements.
Technical Indicators Turn Bearish
Several important technical signals have begun favoring sellers.
The most closely watched development is a bearish crossover on the daily MACD indicator.
This marks the first bearish MACD crossover since Hyperliquid’s rally accelerated in May and is often interpreted as an early warning sign of weakening momentum.
Additional indicators show similar trends:
- MACD histogram has turned negative
- Relative Strength Index (RSI) has fallen from above 70 to around 54
- Buying momentum has weakened considerably
- Price has failed to maintain recent breakout levels
Together, these signals suggest that bulls have lost control of short-term market momentum.
Why $55 and $50 Matter
Technical analysis identifies two key support zones that traders are watching closely.
The first major support area sits between $54 and $55, corresponding to an important Fibonacci retracement level from Hyperliquid’s broader rally.
If this support fails, attention could quickly shift toward the next major target near $50.
A break below $50 would increase the risk of a deeper correction toward the $48 region and potentially lower levels associated with earlier consolidation zones.
For now, the $54–$55 area represents the most important line of defense for bulls.
Liquidation Zones Could Increase Downside Risk
Data from liquidation heatmaps suggests that large concentrations of leveraged positions remain clustered between $60 and $64.
Additional liquidity pools are located around the $58 level and below.
If HYPE experiences another sharp move through these areas, forced liquidations could amplify volatility and accelerate price swings.
This dynamic has become increasingly important as leveraged trading activity continues to grow around the token.
Institutional Buyers Continue Accumulating
Despite the recent weakness, not all major investors are selling.
Wallets linked to venture capital giant Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) reportedly accumulated an additional 224,100 HYPE tokens during the selloff.
The purchase was valued at more than $15 million and increased a16z-linked holdings to approximately 6.9 million HYPE tokens acquired during 2026.
At current market prices, those holdings are worth more than $322 million.
This accumulation contrasts sharply with the profit-taking behavior seen among several high-profile traders.
Strong Fundamentals Still Support HYPE
Beyond technical analysis, Hyperliquid continues to benefit from strong underlying fundamentals.
The platform remains one of the highest revenue-generating protocols in the crypto industry.
Key strengths include:
- Growing perpetual futures market share
- High protocol revenue generation
- Significant trading activity
- Programmatic token buybacks
- Strong ecosystem participation
Perhaps most importantly, approximately 99% of protocol fees are directed toward HYPE buybacks, creating a unique value-accrual mechanism that continues to support long-term demand.
What Happens Next?
The short-term outlook now depends largely on whether bulls can defend the $55 support area and reclaim higher resistance levels.
The key levels to watch include:
Support
- $55
- $50
- $48
Resistance
- $64
- $70
- $75.48 all-time high
A move back above $64 could invalidate some of the recent bearish signals and help restore momentum.
However, if selling pressure continues and support near $55 breaks, traders may begin targeting the $50 level as the next major destination.
For now, Hyperliquid remains caught between strong long-term fundamentals and deteriorating short-term technical conditions. The battle between institutional accumulation and whale-led profit-taking is likely to determine the token’s next major move.
