Bitcoin futures on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) have recorded the largest price gap in the exchange’s history, sparking speculation about a potential price correction.
CME Bitcoin Futures Gap Reaches $10,350
According to TradingView data from March 2, CME Bitcoin futures closed at $84,650 in the previous session and opened at $95,000 in the next, creating a significant $10,350 gap. This surpasses the previous record of just over $4,000, set in August 2024.
CME gaps occur because Bitcoin trades continuously on global crypto markets, while CME futures pause on weekends. When Bitcoin experiences major price movements during these breaks, a gap forms between Friday’s closing price and Sunday’s opening price. Traders closely monitor these gaps, as Bitcoin has historically “filled” them—returning to the gap level before resuming its trend. This pattern is attributed to liquidity imbalances, with institutional traders placing orders around untraded price zones.
Bitcoin Surges Following Trump’s Crypto Strategic Reserve Announcement
The latest CME gap emerged after Bitcoin soared from $85,000 to nearly $95,000 following President Donald Trump’s announcement of a U.S. Crypto Strategic Reserve on March 2. The news injected over $300 billion into crypto spot markets, driving Bitcoin and altcoins to new highs.
Bitcoin has already filled a prior gap between $92,800 and $94,000, but in doing so, it created an even larger gap between $84,650 and $94,000. While the exact timing remains uncertain, traders anticipate that Bitcoin will eventually revisit these levels, as historical trends suggest that large CME gaps tend to close over time.
Will Bitcoin Correct to Fill the Gap?
Although Bitcoin remains in an uptrend, traders are now watching closely to see whether the market will correct to close the newly formed gap. Historical data from previous bull markets shows that some CME gaps took weeks or even months to fill, with certain gaps remaining open until the following bear market.
The question now is whether Bitcoin will maintain its bullish momentum or face a retracement to close this record-breaking gap. As the market digests recent developments, traders will continue to monitor CME futures for signs of potential corrections in the coming weeks.
