Tokyo-based Metaplanet has once again made waves in the Bitcoin market, adding 5,419 BTC to its treasury and cementing its status as Asia’s largest corporate Bitcoin holder.
A $627 Million Buy at $115.9K Per BTC
In a disclosure filed on Sept. 22, the publicly listed firm revealed it spent 93.65 billion yen (about $627 million) to acquire the latest batch of coins. The purchase was made at an average price of 17.28 million yen (roughly $115,900) per Bitcoin.
This move brings Metaplanet’s total reserves to 25,555 BTC, valued at approximately 398.21 billion yen ($2.67 billion). The company’s cumulative average purchase price now stands at about 15.58 million yen ($104,400) per BTC.
Rapid Expansion of Bitcoin Treasury
Metaplanet has been aggressively growing its Bitcoin position since launching its treasury program. The firm’s stash has nearly doubled in just three months—rising from 13,350 BTC at the end of June to over 25,500 BTC by late September.
To fund these purchases, Metaplanet has leaned on equity offerings and bond redemptions, mirroring the playbook of U.S. giant MicroStrategy.
The company also tracks its performance through a unique metric called “BTC Yield,” which measures Bitcoin growth per fully diluted share. Between July 1 and Sept. 22, BTC Yield grew 10.3%, even with the dilution effects of share issuance.
Backing From Capital Markets
Much of this growth has been powered by capital market activity. In mid-September, Metaplanet completed an international share offering that raised over $1 billion, with most of the funds earmarked for Bitcoin acquisitions. Roughly half of that war chest has already been deployed.
Market Position and Ambitions
With its latest buy, Metaplanet has leapfrogged major global names like Coinbase and Tesla in terms of corporate Bitcoin reserves. The firm now holds more BTC than any other publicly traded company in Asia.
But Metaplanet isn’t stopping here. Its roadmap includes:
- 30,000 BTC by end of 2025
- 100,000 BTC by 2026
- 210,000 BTC by 2027 — equal to about 1% of Bitcoin’s total fixed supply
The company’s stock has been volatile, but momentum is on its side. In September, FTSE Russell upgraded Metaplanet to mid-cap status, with inclusion in the All-World and FTSE Japan indexes driving passive inflows from global funds.
A Long-Term Bitcoin Accumulator
Metaplanet is positioning itself as a true Bitcoin proxy stock in Asia, attracting both retail and institutional investors who want exposure to BTC without holding it directly. Its long-term strategy echoes that of MicroStrategy, but with a regional twist as it anchors Bitcoin adoption in Asia’s financial markets.
With its latest acquisition, the company is steadily advancing toward its ambitious targets and further entrenching itself as a central player in the global Bitcoin treasury race.
