Binance is facing one of its most critical market tests in years as its grip on global crypto trading continues to weaken. Fresh data shows the exchange’s dominance in spot and derivatives markets has fallen sharply, signaling what analysts describe as a structural shift rather than a temporary slowdown.
Spot dominance sinks to multi-year low
Binance’s share of global spot trading volume dropped to 25% in December, its lowest level since January 2021. Just a month earlier, the figure stood at 28.5%, and at its 2023 peak, Binance processed close to 60% of all spot crypto transactions.
Spot trading, which involves the direct buying and selling of crypto assets, typically accounts for around a quarter of total crypto market activity. With the broader crypto market valued near $3.2 trillion, the erosion of Binance’s spot share highlights a meaningful redistribution of liquidity across competing platforms.
Derivatives share cut in half
The pressure is even more pronounced in derivatives, Binance’s primary revenue driver. Its dominance in derivatives trading has slid from roughly 70% at peak levels to around 35%, according to market analysts. While Binance remains the world’s largest centralized exchange, the scale of the decline suggests intensifying competition rather than cyclical weakness.
Analysts say trading volume is steadily rotating away from Binance toward offshore centralized exchanges such as Bybit, HTX, and Gate. In contrast, U.S.-based platforms have captured only a modest share of the shift.
On-chain rivals reshape trading behavior
Beyond centralized competitors, on-chain platforms are emerging as a major force. Decentralized derivatives venues like Hyperliquid are gaining traction, particularly among traders seeking non-custodial alternatives.
According to analysts, the rise of on-chain derivatives reflects a deeper change in how market participants trade. Rather than relying exclusively on centralized order books, users are increasingly comfortable executing large volumes directly on-chain, reducing reliance on dominant exchanges like Binance.
U.S. flows bypass centralized exchanges
Despite a more favorable regulatory environment for crypto in the United States, analysts note that this has not translated into higher reported volumes on centralized exchanges. Instead, much of the activity is being driven by institutional investors using over-the-counter desks and non-exchange channels, limiting upside for major CEXs.
This trend has further diluted Binance’s influence, particularly as U.S. trading activity becomes less visible in traditional exchange volume metrics.
How Binance is responding
Binance’s dominance surged during periods of industry turmoil. In mid-2022, following the collapse of TerraUSD, the exchange launched a zero-fee spot trading campaign that rapidly boosted its market share. That dominance was reinforced after the bankruptcy of rival exchange FTX, pushing Binance’s spot share close to 60%. The zero-fee program ended in 2023.
To adapt to the new competitive landscape, Binance has introduced significant management and strategic changes. Co-founder Yi He was recently appointed co-CEO, marking the most notable leadership shift since Changpeng Zhao stepped down. Zhao later received a presidential pardon from U.S. President Donald Trump in October, easing some regulatory pressure on the company.
Binance has also expanded its global regulatory footprint, securing multiple licenses from the Abu Dhabi financial regulator as it looks to strengthen operations outside traditional Western markets.
A defining moment for Binance bulls
The steady erosion of Binance’s market share across both spot and derivatives suggests the exchange is entering a defining phase. With offshore rivals, on-chain platforms, and alternative trading channels gaining ground, analysts say Binance’s next moves will determine whether it can stabilize its dominance or continue ceding influence in an increasingly fragmented crypto market.
