JPMorgan Chase is bringing its JPM Coin deposit token to the Ethereum mainnet, giving institutional clients a new way to move money, settle transactions, and manage collateral using blockchain technology.
The expansion marks another significant step in JPMorgan’s efforts to integrate traditional banking services with public blockchain networks. It also highlights the growing interest among major financial institutions in using blockchain infrastructure for everyday financial operations.
According to an October 19 Bloomberg report, JPMorgan is expanding JPM Coin, also known by its ticker JPMD, to Ethereum after initially introducing the token on Coinbase’s Base network in November 2025.
The move will allow approved institutional customers to transfer tokenized US dollar deposits around the clock without relying entirely on conventional banking schedules.
JPMorgan JPM Coin Ethereum Expansion Builds on Base Launch
JPMorgan’s decision to introduce JPM Coin on Ethereum comes nearly a year after its initial rollout on Base, Coinbase’s Ethereum Layer 2 network.
The bank began testing its deposit token in June 2025, working with companies including Coinbase, Mastercard, and digital asset trading firm B2C2.
During the testing phase, participants successfully issued and redeemed JPM Coin, demonstrating how tokenized bank deposits could move between traditional financial systems and blockchain wallets.
Following those tests, JPMorgan made JPMD available to qualified institutional customers on Base in November 2025.
Now, the bank is taking the next step by bringing the token directly to Ethereum’s mainnet.
Although Base and Ethereum are closely connected, they operate as separate blockchain networks. Base is a Layer 2 network designed to process transactions using its own infrastructure, while Ethereum serves as the underlying Layer 1 blockchain.
By launching JPM Coin on Ethereum, JPMorgan can connect its deposit token with an established ecosystem of tokenized financial assets and blockchain-based applications.
The bank cited Ethereum’s existing liquidity, growing tokenized asset market, and demand from institutional clients as important reasons behind the expansion.
However, JPMorgan has not disclosed how many customers will initially use JPMD on Ethereum or the total amount of tokens expected to be issued.
What Is JPM Coin and How Does It Work?
JPM Coin is a blockchain-based deposit token representing US dollars held at JPMorgan.
Unlike traditional cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin or Ethereum’s native ETH token, JPM Coin is not designed for public trading or speculative investment.
Instead, it allows eligible JPMorgan customers to transfer digital representations of their bank deposits through supported blockchain networks.
For example, an approved institution can convert qualifying dollar balances into JPMD, transfer those tokens through blockchain infrastructure, and redeem them through JPMorgan’s banking system.
This process can make transactions faster and more flexible, particularly when financial institutions operate across different countries and time zones.
JPM Coin also supports programmable payment arrangements, allowing institutions to connect certain transaction instructions with blockchain-based systems.
The bank manages the relationship between the digital tokens and the deposits backing them through its existing banking infrastructure.
Ethereum Integration Could Improve Institutional Payments and Settlement
One of the main goals of the JPM Coin Ethereum expansion is to improve how financial institutions transfer money and settle transactions.
Traditional financial systems often depend on banking hours, intermediaries, and different settlement processes.
These limitations can create delays, particularly when payments involve financial institutions operating in multiple jurisdictions.
Blockchain technology offers an alternative by enabling eligible participants to transfer tokenized funds through compatible networks.
Emma Landriault, global head of Kinexys Labs, told Bloomberg that cryptocurrency companies could use JPMD for payments, while traditional financial institutions could use it to settle securities transactions or provide collateral for tokenized assets.
The potential applications include:
- Institutional payments: Moving tokenized dollar deposits between approved participants.
- Securities settlement: Completing financial transactions involving tokenized investment products.
- Collateral transfers: Using JPMD in eligible transactions that require financial guarantees.
- Round-the-clock transactions: Supporting payments outside conventional banking hours.
- Programmable payments: Connecting payment instructions with compatible blockchain applications.
These capabilities could help financial institutions simplify certain processes and reduce settlement delays.
However, the Ethereum launch does not mean every exchange, financial platform, or clearinghouse will automatically accept JPM Coin.
Its practical use will depend on participating institutions, technical integrations, and applicable compliance requirements.
JPM Coin Will Remain Limited to Approved Institutional Clients
Although Ethereum is a public blockchain, JPM Coin will not be available to everyone.
JPMorgan has made it clear that the token is intended for approved institutional customers who meet the bank’s account and compliance requirements.
This is an important distinction because Ethereum generally allows users to access decentralized applications and transfer digital assets without joining a private banking network.
JPM Coin operates differently.
As a tokenized commercial bank deposit, JPMD remains connected to JPMorgan’s banking system and the bank’s obligations to its depositors.
That makes it different from public stablecoins, which are generally designed to circulate among a wider range of cryptocurrency users.
While both can represent dollar-denominated value on a blockchain, they operate under different structures and eligibility rules.
JPMorgan’s decision to maintain institutional restrictions reflects its focus on regulated financial services rather than the broader retail cryptocurrency market.
The bank has also encouraged users to verify official token contract information, as unrelated digital assets may use similar names.
As of the October 19 announcement, the reviewed materials did not establish an independently verified Ethereum mainnet contract address for JPMD.
JPMorgan Is Expanding Its Presence in Tokenized Finance
JPM Coin is not JPMorgan’s first blockchain-related initiative on Ethereum.
The banking giant has already introduced tokenized investment products as part of its broader digital asset strategy.
In December 2025, JPMorgan’s asset management division launched its first tokenized money market fund on Ethereum, initially supported by $100 million in internal capital.
The fund was designed to give institutional investors access to an investment product whose ownership records are maintained using blockchain technology.
In May 2026, J.P. Morgan Asset Management introduced another tokenized money market fund called JLTXX.
The fund focuses on government money market instruments and was developed with the reserve requirements of eligible stablecoin issuers in mind.
JPMorgan committed $100 million to JLTXX when it launched, allowing qualified investors to subscribe through its Morgan Money platform and receive tokenized fund interests.
These investment products are separate from JPM Coin.
While tokenized money market funds represent interests in investment portfolios, JPMD represents qualifying deposits held at JPMorgan.
The distinction matters because funds invested in tokenized investment products should not be counted as JPM Coin circulating on Ethereum.
Kinexys Reports More Than $4 Trillion in Cumulative Transactions
JPMorgan’s blockchain ambitions extend beyond individual tokens and investment funds.
Its Kinexys business has been developing infrastructure to support digital payments, asset tokenization, and institutional financial transactions.
According to the bank’s October announcement, Kinexys has processed more than $4 trillion in cumulative transaction value.
The platform has also been handling approximately $7 billion in daily transactions on average.
These figures demonstrate the scale of JPMorgan’s existing blockchain-related financial operations.
However, they represent activity across the broader Kinexys platform, not JPM Coin transactions conducted specifically on Ethereum.
JPMorgan has not yet published the circulating JPMD balance, total transaction volume, or number of active institutional users on Ethereum mainnet.
JPMorgan Also Plans to Bring JPM Coin to Canton Network
Ethereum is not the only blockchain network included in JPMorgan’s expansion plans.
The bank is also working with Digital Asset to introduce JPM Coin to the Canton Network, a blockchain platform focused on institutional financial services and transaction privacy.
In January 2026, Kinexys and Digital Asset announced plans to support native issuance, transfers, and redemption of JPMD on Canton.
The proposed integration aims to combine tokenized bank deposits with blockchain infrastructure designed for regulated financial institutions.
Unlike public blockchains that make transaction information broadly accessible, Canton is designed to help institutions coordinate transactions while controlling access to sensitive financial information.
This approach could be particularly useful for securities transactions, collateral management, and other financial activities where confidentiality is important.
The companies outlined a phased integration process during 2026, beginning with the technical and business infrastructure required to support JPMD.
They also indicated that additional Kinexys services, including Blockchain Deposit Accounts, could be considered for future integration.
However, JPMorgan and Digital Asset have not confirmed that the entire planned Canton deployment is fully operational.
The Ethereum launch is a separate development and should not be confused with the proposed Canton integration.
Why JPMorgan’s Ethereum Expansion Matters
JPMorgan’s decision to bring JPM Coin to Ethereum reflects a broader shift in how major financial institutions view blockchain technology.
Rather than focusing only on cryptocurrency trading, banks are increasingly exploring practical financial applications such as payments, securities settlement, and asset tokenization.
Ethereum has become an important network for these activities because it already supports a substantial ecosystem of tokenized assets and blockchain-based financial applications.
For JPMorgan, integrating JPM Coin with Ethereum could make it easier for approved customers to interact with compatible financial infrastructure.
For the wider financial industry, the development shows how commercial bank deposits can be represented and transferred on public blockchain networks while remaining subject to institutional controls.
Still, the long-term impact will depend on adoption by financial institutions, transaction activity, regulatory requirements, and the availability of compatible services.
JPMorgan’s expansion of JPM Coin to Ethereum represents another milestone in the relationship between traditional banking and blockchain technology.
After launching JPMD on Base in November 2025, the bank is now extending its tokenized deposit infrastructure to Ethereum, where institutional demand for tokenized financial services continues to develop.
The move could create additional opportunities for faster payments, securities settlement, and collateral transfers among approved participants.
At the same time, JPM Coin remains a restricted institutional product rather than a cryptocurrency available for unrestricted public use.
With JPMorgan also exploring integration with Canton and expanding its tokenized investment offerings, the Ethereum launch reinforces the bank’s commitment to developing blockchain-based financial infrastructure.
Whether JPM Coin becomes widely used on Ethereum will ultimately depend on how many institutions adopt the service and how effectively it integrates with existing financial markets.
