Crypto asset manager Grayscale has officially released its Q3 2025 Crypto Sectors report, introducing Avalanche (AVAX) and Morpho (MORPHO) to its updated Top 20 assets list. The changes reflect shifting investor focus toward on-chain lending, gaming, and broader DeFi infrastructure while also signaling a move away from certain staking and Layer 2 narratives due to growing regulatory headwinds.
Why Avalanche and Morpho Were Added
Grayscale’s research team attributed Avalanche’s inclusion to a notable uptick in transaction volume and user activity, potentially driven by the onboarding of the popular video game MapleStory and expanded stablecoin integration. These developments suggest a resurgence of organic ecosystem growth within the AVAX ecosystem.
Meanwhile, Morpho, a decentralized lending protocol, earned its spot due to rapid TVL expansion and strong fundamentals. With over $4 billion locked and accelerating fee generation, Morpho is now the second-largest lending protocol in the DeFi space. The recent launch of Morpho V2 aimed at bridging traditional finance with DeFi has further positioned the protocol for continued institutional adoption.
“The addition of Morpho reflects our conviction in the growing importance of decentralized lending protocols in shaping the next wave of DeFi infrastructure,” the report notes.
Who Got Dropped: Lido and Optimism
To make room for the new additions, Lido (LDO) and Optimism (OP) were removed from Grayscale’s Top 20 list. Despite their importance in staking services and Layer 2 Ethereum scaling, Grayscale cited regulatory concerns and economic value capture issues as key reasons for their exclusion.
- Lido: Faces pressure due to the uncertain regulatory environment surrounding staking services, which could impair long-term fee sustainability.
- Optimism: While widely adopted in terms of tech infrastructure, the OP token has struggled to accrue real value from ecosystem growth.
Sector Trends: Lending and AI Take the Lead
The Q3 report also highlighted key developments across crypto verticals:
- Smart Contract Platforms saw increased transaction activity, but a decline in revenue as memecoin hype cooled.
- The DeFi Lending segment stood out as a top performer, with assets like Morpho, Aave (AAVE), and Maple Finance (SYRUP) poised for long-term growth.
- AI-integrated crypto projects are on the rise: Grayscale finalized its new AI Crypto Sector, now tracking 24 tokens worth $15 billion, led by Bittensor (TAO).
“We continue to see long-term opportunity in decentralized AI, on-chain lending, and platforms enabling real-world utility,” Grayscale concluded in the report.
Looking Ahead: Sector Rotation and Regulatory Impact
Grayscale’s Top 20 reshuffle reflects a broader sector rotation within crypto markets. As staking narratives face regulatory friction and L2 tokens struggle with value capture, investor attention appears to be shifting toward real-yield protocols and ecosystem-native growth stories like Avalanche and Morpho.
This shift aligns with the evolving macro landscape, where revenue generation, composability, and institutional compatibility are becoming essential indicators of a project’s long-term viability.
