Kalshi’s short-duration gold markets have quickly become one of the platform’s most active products, overtaking comparable Ether contracts only weeks after launch.
During September, Kalshi’s 15-minute gold markets recorded 542 million contracts, compared with 318 million contracts for Ether-linked markets.
Estimated fees also favored gold.
Predict Charts estimated that gold generated roughly $5 million in September trading fees, almost double the $2.6 million attributed to 15-minute Ether markets.
Bitcoin, however, remained far ahead of both.
Its comparable short-duration markets generated an estimated $60.4 million in fees during the month.
- Kalshi’s 15-minute gold markets recorded 542 million contracts in September.
- Ether-linked 15-minute markets recorded 318 million contracts.
- Estimated gold fees reached about $5 million, compared with $2.6 million for Ether.
- Bitcoin remained the leading 15-minute market, with an estimated $60.4 million in September fees.
- Fifteen-minute crypto, commodity and financial markets generated $20.4 million in fees during the seven days through Oct. 5.
- Kalshi said its commodity markets reached $400 million in cumulative trading volume within seven months.
- Commodities reached that milestone faster than crypto did during its early development on the platform.
Kalshi gold markets overtake Ether within weeks
Kalshi launched its 15-minute gold contracts in August.
The format asks traders to predict whether gold will finish above or below a specified reference level when each 15-minute trading window closes.
Despite being relatively new, gold quickly attracted significant activity.
September’s 542 million contracts were roughly 70% higher than Ether’s 318 million total.
Kalshi market pages show that the gold contracts were already active by Aug. 7.
Each market remains open for a short period before settling against a predetermined reference price.
For gold, Kalshi uses pricing data from Pyth to determine the final outcome.
Pyth had already been selected as a pricing provider for several of Kalshi’s commodity products, including gold, silver, oil and agricultural markets.
Ether had a longer head start
Gold’s rapid growth is notable because Ether’s short-duration markets had been available for considerably longer.
Kalshi began expanding short-term crypto contracts in late 2025, and ETH trading activity increased throughout 2026.
By March, short-duration Bitcoin and Ether prediction markets had already become a significant part of trading activity across prediction platforms.
Even with that head start, Ether was overtaken by gold in September based on the number of contracts traded.
The comparison highlights how quickly traders have adopted short-duration commodity markets.
However, gold still remains far behind Bitcoin when measured by estimated fee generation.
Predict Charts estimated Bitcoin’s September fees at $60.4 million.
That was more than 12 times the estimated amount generated by gold.
Fee figures are estimates, not company revenue
It is important to distinguish the reported figures from Kalshi’s official financial results.
Predict Charts derives its estimates from Kalshi trade records.
The approximately $5 million for gold, $2.6 million for Ether and $60.4 million for Bitcoin should therefore be treated as estimates rather than company-reported revenue.
The numbers are still useful for comparing relative trading activity across different markets.
They suggest that short-duration products are becoming a meaningful source of fees within Kalshi’s broader business.
Fifteen-minute markets are generating a growing share of fees
Gold’s rise forms part of a larger increase in activity across Kalshi markets that settle every 15 minutes.
InGame reported that 15-minute crypto, commodity and financial products generated approximately $20.4 million in fees during the seven days through Oct. 5.
During the same period, Kalshi collected an estimated $25.1 million from all non-sports markets.
That means short-duration products accounted for roughly 80% of estimated non-sports fees during the seven-day period.
Their share of total trading volume was much smaller.
According to InGame, 15-minute markets represented about 13% of overall Kalshi volume while generating roughly 20% of total fees.
That difference suggests short-duration markets can be particularly valuable from a fee-generation perspective.
Kalshi’s fee structure favors some short-term markets
Part of the difference comes from how Kalshi calculates transaction charges.
The company says fees depend partly on a contract’s expected earnings.
Predict Charts notes that the effective fee rate tends to be highest when contracts trade close to 50 cents.
Fees generally decline as contract prices move closer to either extreme.
Short-duration price markets frequently trade near even odds because traders are deciding whether an asset will rise or fall over a very short period.
That means many of these markets spend considerable time around the middle of the price range.
InGame attributed part of the strong fee contribution from 15-minute markets to this structure.
Daily fees have reached millions of dollars
Over the seven days through Oct. 5, Kalshi reportedly generated at least $3 million in daily estimated fees from 15-minute crypto, commodity and financial products on four separate occasions.
One Friday reached approximately $3.3 million, according to InGame.
The numbers show how quickly short-duration markets have grown from a niche format into an important part of Kalshi’s non-sports activity.
Crypto remains the largest contributor within the category, but gold’s strong launch suggests commodities may become increasingly important.
Commodities are becoming a bigger part of Kalshi
Kalshi’s commodity business has expanded significantly during 2026.
The company said on Sept. 8 that its commodity markets had reached $400 million in cumulative trading volume within seven months.
According to Kalshi, commodities reached that milestone in roughly half the time it took its crypto category.
At the same stage of development, commodity contracts had generated more than four times the volume recorded by Kalshi’s crypto markets.
That suggests demand for event-based commodity trading has grown faster than the company initially experienced with cryptocurrency markets.
The $400 million figure is different from the 542 million gold contracts
The two headline figures measure different things.
Kalshi’s $400 million commodity figure refers to dollar trading volume across the broader commodity category.
The 542 million gold figure refers to the number of contracts traded in 15-minute gold markets during September.
They should not be compared directly.
One measures dollars traded.
The other measures contract count.
Keeping those units separate is important when assessing the growth of Kalshi’s commodity products.
Kalshi has expanded beyond gold
Gold is only one part of Kalshi’s commodity offering.
The platform also supports markets tied to silver, oil, copper and agricultural products.
Settlement outcomes are determined using specified external pricing sources.
Kalshi has also indicated that it wants to expand into additional commodity products.
In September, the company said it had filed for perpetual contracts linked to gold, silver and platinum.
Kalshi said it planned to launch those products, although it did not announce a specific release date.
If introduced, those contracts would expand the company’s commodity business beyond prediction-style markets.
Kalshi is also building out crypto perpetual futures
Kalshi’s expansion is not limited to prediction markets.
Its crypto perpetual futures business passed $5.5 billion in volume within two weeks of launching earlier in the year.
The company later faced questions about unusually high Ether perpetual trading volume.
Kalshi said that activity was connected to liquidity programs and involved a separate product from its event contracts.
That distinction matters in the current comparison.
The 318 million Ether figure used against gold refers specifically to 15-minute prediction contracts.
It does not include ETH perpetual futures activity.
Non-sports markets are becoming more important
Kalshi’s overall business has traditionally been associated heavily with sports and event markets.
However, non-sports products are gaining a larger share of activity.
InGame found that non-sports markets accounted for more than 25% of Kalshi’s estimated fee revenue in September.
Across 2026 through Oct. 6, their share stood at approximately 19.2%.
That compares with about 11% during 2025.
The increase suggests Kalshi is becoming less dependent on its traditional event categories.
Financial, crypto and commodity markets are playing a growing role.
Crypto still leads within the 15-minute segment
Despite gold’s rapid rise, crypto remains the biggest contributor within Kalshi’s 15-minute market category.
According to InGame, daily fees from short-duration crypto markets were below $10,000 in January.
By September, that figure had risen above $2 million per day.
That growth demonstrates how quickly traders adopted short-duration crypto contracts during 2026.
Gold appears to be following a similar trajectory.
A gold contract from Sept. 25 recorded more than $386,000 in volume during a single 15-minute window.
Other gold markets have also generated tens of thousands of dollars in activity over similarly short periods.
Kalshi’s wider business is growing quickly
The expansion in short-duration markets comes as Kalshi’s overall business continues to grow.
The company has reportedly entered discussions to raise around $1 billion in new capital at a valuation near $40 billion.
Earlier in 2026, Kalshi had secured a valuation of approximately $22 billion.
The more recent fundraising discussions had not been confirmed as a completed financing round at the time of the report.
Even so, the potential valuation increase reflects the company’s rapid growth across multiple trading categories.
Gold shows traders are embracing short-duration commodity bets
Gold’s performance is significant because it demonstrates that the popularity of 15-minute markets is not limited to crypto.
The same trading format that attracted users to Bitcoin and Ether is now gaining traction in commodities.
Gold overtaking Ether within weeks of launch shows that users are willing to make very short-term predictions on traditional financial assets as well.
The product’s fee generation also suggests this activity can be commercially meaningful for Kalshi.
Although Bitcoin remains far ahead, gold’s rapid growth has made it one of the platform’s most important short-duration markets.
Kalshi is broadening beyond its original prediction-market model
The broader trend is clear.
Kalshi is expanding from traditional event contracts into a wider range of financial markets.
Short-duration crypto products, commodities and perpetual futures are becoming increasingly important to the platform.
The company’s commodity business has already reached $400 million in cumulative trading volume, while its 15-minute gold markets surpassed Ether in September contract activity.
At the same time, short-duration products are generating a disproportionately large share of fees relative to their trading volume.
That could encourage Kalshi to continue expanding the format into additional asset classes.
For now, Bitcoin remains the clear leader.
But gold’s rapid move past Ether shows that commodity markets may become an increasingly important part of Kalshi’s next stage of growth.
