Robinhood has added $25 million worth of Bitcoin to its corporate balance sheet, giving the trading platform direct exposure to the cryptocurrency as it continues expanding deeper into digital assets.
The purchase comes as Robinhood builds out a broader crypto business spanning spot trading, perpetual futures, tokenized stocks, blockchain infrastructure and self-custodial products.
Johann Kerbrat, Robinhood’s senior vice president and general manager of crypto and international, said the Bitcoin purchase was intended to bring the company’s own financial position closer in line with the crypto ecosystem it serves.
According to Kerbrat, the move reflects Robinhood’s long-term view of Bitcoin rather than a major change to the company’s overall financial strategy.
- Robinhood has added $25 million worth of Bitcoin to its balance sheet.
- Crypto chief Johann Kerbrat said the purchase is intended to align the company more closely with Bitcoin and the broader crypto community.
- Robinhood continues to expand into perpetual futures, tokenized stocks, Bitstamp infrastructure and its Ethereum Layer 2 network, Robinhood Chain.
- Robinhood reported $17.5 billion in crypto notional trading volume in August.
- Strategy purchased another 334 BTC for around $28.7 million between Sept. 28 and Oct. 4.
- Bitcoin was trading near $84,000, with $82,000 remaining a key support level and $87,500 an important recovery level.
Robinhood puts company capital behind Bitcoin
Robinhood’s decision to hold Bitcoin directly adds another layer to its growing involvement in the crypto market.
Kerbrat said the company cares deeply about Bitcoin and the ecosystem around it, describing the purchase as a way to better align Robinhood’s corporate vision with the crypto community.
At the same time, he emphasized that the $25 million allocation is relatively small compared with the size of the company.
Robinhood’s Nasdaq-listed shares closed Tuesday at $112, down 1.85%, giving the company a market capitalization of roughly $100 billion.
Against that backdrop, Kerbrat said the Bitcoin position is unlikely to materially change Robinhood’s overall financial trajectory.
Instead, the purchase appears to be more strategic and symbolic, putting company capital behind an asset that already plays a major role in its trading business.
Robinhood’s crypto trading activity continues to grow
The balance sheet purchase comes as cryptocurrency activity on Robinhood continues to expand.
The company reported $17.5 billion in crypto notional trading volume during August, up 61% from $10.9 billion in July.
Bitstamp accounted for approximately $10.1 billion of that activity, while another $7.4 billion was processed through Robinhood’s main trading application.
Robinhood acquired Bitstamp in 2025, giving the company access to additional institutional and international crypto infrastructure.
By the end of August, Robinhood reported 28.6 million funded customers and approximately $384 billion in total platform assets.
The rising crypto volume shows that digital assets are becoming an increasingly important part of Robinhood’s broader business.
Robinhood Bitcoin purchase follows derivatives expansion
Robinhood is also moving beyond traditional spot cryptocurrency trading.
The company is preparing to launch perpetual futures for eligible U.S. customers.
Its planned offering covers Bitcoin, Ether, Solana, XRP, Dogecoin, Cardano, Chainlink and Hyperliquid.
Bitcoin and Ether perpetual contracts are expected to offer leverage of up to 10x.
The remaining supported assets are expected to offer leverage of up to 3x.
The products are expected to operate through Robinhood Derivatives using infrastructure provided by Bitstamp.
Trading fees are set at 0.01% through the end of 2026.
Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev has described the upcoming offering as the first “true perps” available to U.S. users, with contracts that do not expire and profit and loss settled every 15 minutes.
The move gives Robinhood another way to compete in the crypto derivatives market while bringing products commonly found on offshore exchanges into a regulated U.S. platform.
Tokenized stocks remain another major focus
Robinhood’s crypto strategy also includes tokenized equities.
The company has said trading activity in its stock tokens is already approaching limits set under the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s five-year innovation exemption for tokenized securities.
Kerbrat said Robinhood plans to expand the functionality of these products over time.
Possible additions include voting rights and in-kind redemptions.
The company is also working toward offering tokenized exposure to a broader selection of U.S. stocks and exchange-traded funds.
Tokenized equities are part of Robinhood’s wider plan to connect traditional financial assets with blockchain-based infrastructure.
Robinhood Chain gives the company its own blockchain network
A major part of Robinhood’s onchain strategy is Robinhood Chain.
The network is an Ethereum Layer 2 built using Arbitrum technology.
Robinhood launched the public mainnet on July 1 alongside tokenized stocks and decentralized perpetual futures.
Eligible users in more than 120 countries were given access to tokenized equities through Robinhood Wallet and supported decentralized exchanges.
Early trading activity was heavily concentrated in crypto-native assets.
During its first week, Robinhood Chain reportedly processed around $570 million in trading volume while holding approximately $21.68 million in liquidity.
Memecoin trading represented a significant portion of that activity.
Robinhood Chain activity expanded quickly
Usage on the network continued to grow after launch.
Robinhood Chain recorded approximately 7.6 million transactions on July 11 alone.
For comparison, Coinbase’s Base network processed around 9.2 million transactions during the same period, according to onchain data cited in the report.
By late July, Robinhood Chain had reportedly processed more than $12 billion in decentralized exchange trading volume and more than 150 million transactions.
Robinhood Wallet gives the company another distribution channel into the network and is available in more than 120 countries.
Kerbrat said Robinhood has around 27 million funded accounts in the United States and another 1 million internationally.
That large user base gives Robinhood Chain a potentially significant built-in distribution advantage compared with many newer Layer 2 networks.
Robinhood joins a growing group of corporate Bitcoin holders
Robinhood’s $25 million purchase adds the company to the growing list of publicly traded businesses holding Bitcoin directly.
However, its position remains small compared with companies that have made Bitcoin a central part of their treasury strategies.
Strategy remains the most prominent example.
The company said it purchased another 334 BTC for approximately $28.7 million between Sept. 28 and Oct. 4.
Strategy paid an average of $85,838.80 per Bitcoin in that transaction.
The purchase increased its total holdings to 848,000 BTC.
Strategy continues aggressive Bitcoin accumulation
The latest Strategy purchase followed another major acquisition just one week earlier.
During the week ended Sept. 27, Strategy bought 1,665 BTC for approximately $142.7 million.
The company paid an average of $85,681 per coin.
That transaction increased its holdings at the time to 847,666 BTC.
Strategy funded the purchase through sales of its MSTR common stock.
The company raised approximately $246.2 million in net proceeds from the sale of 1.47 million shares.
Of that total, around $142.7 million was used to purchase Bitcoin.
Another $103.5 million went toward repurchases of STRC preferred shares.
Strategy resumed buying after a brief pause
Strategy had returned to Bitcoin buying only a week earlier after pausing purchases for two weeks.
Between Sept. 14 and Sept. 20, the company spent approximately $75.7 million to acquire 950 BTC.
The average purchase price was around $79,670 per Bitcoin.
Strategy’s continued buying shows the difference between Robinhood’s relatively modest treasury allocation and a company built around large-scale Bitcoin accumulation.
Robinhood’s $25 million holding is comparatively small and appears to serve a broader strategic purpose rather than forming the core of its business model.
Not every company is maintaining a Bitcoin treasury
Corporate Bitcoin strategies have also moved in different directions during 2026.
While companies such as Strategy continue accumulating, others have reduced or eliminated their holdings.
Sequans Communications, for example, sold its remaining 314 BTC in September.
The company had previously used Bitcoin sales to reduce convertible debt before ultimately ending its Bitcoin treasury strategy.
This contrast shows that corporate Bitcoin holdings are not necessarily permanent.
Companies may accumulate, reduce or exit their positions depending on capital needs, debt structures and broader business priorities.
Bitcoin trades near $84,000
Robinhood’s purchase comes as Bitcoin remains under pressure in the broader market.
BTC was trading near $84,000 on Wednesday as rising oil prices, higher Treasury yields and a stronger U.S. dollar weighed on risk assets.
The selloff triggered more than $403 million in leveraged long liquidations within a single hour.
Brent crude also moved above $101.
At the same time, Bitcoin exchange supply reportedly fell to 6.5% after approximately 24,073 BTC were withdrawn from trading platforms.
Lower exchange supply can sometimes indicate that holders are moving Bitcoin into longer-term storage, although exchange movements do not always directly signal investor intent.
$82,000 remains an important Bitcoin support level
Bitcoin’s current price remains close to levels analysts had already identified as important entering October.
Bitget Wallet research lead Lacie Zhang previously placed Bitcoin’s likely October trading range between $78,000 and $95,000.
Within that range, $82,000 was identified as an important downside level.
A sustained move below that area could increase the risk of further weakness.
On the upside, Zhang identified $87,500 as a key level Bitcoin would need to recover before a stronger move higher could develop.
A convincing break above that level could reopen the path toward the upper end of the expected October range.
Institutional demand remains important
For Bitcoin to maintain a stronger recovery, institutional buying may need to absorb selling from long-term holders and miners.
That dynamic remains one of the central questions facing the market.
ETF demand has already weakened from the strong levels seen in late September.
Bitfinex analysts said U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF inflows fell from approximately $2.39 billion to $241.1 million during the week ended Oct. 2.
Bitcoin also failed to move above $87,722 during the period.
The analysts described BTC as trading within a range between roughly $84,000 and $87,722 while broader spot demand remained weak.
They also warned that sustained trading below $81,300, particularly if accompanied by ETF withdrawals, could put the recovery at risk.
Robinhood’s Bitcoin purchase is more strategic than transformative
The $25 million Bitcoin purchase is unlikely to transform Robinhood’s financial position on its own.
Compared with a market capitalization of around $100 billion, the allocation represents a relatively small commitment.
Its significance lies more in what it says about Robinhood’s direction.
The company is steadily positioning crypto as a larger part of its business through trading, derivatives, tokenized assets, wallet infrastructure and its own Layer 2 blockchain.
Holding Bitcoin directly adds Robinhood’s own balance sheet to that strategy.
It also gives the company direct economic exposure to an asset already central to its crypto operations.
Robinhood continues building a broader crypto ecosystem
Robinhood is no longer approaching crypto only as another asset class available inside a brokerage app.
Its expansion into Bitstamp, perpetual futures, tokenized stocks, Robinhood Wallet and Robinhood Chain points toward a much broader strategy.
The company increasingly operates across several layers of the crypto market, from trading interfaces and derivatives to blockchain infrastructure and tokenized traditional assets.
The Bitcoin treasury purchase adds another component to that ecosystem.
While $25 million is modest compared with dedicated Bitcoin treasury companies, the move signals that Robinhood is willing to hold the asset directly while continuing to build products around it.
For now, the larger question is whether Robinhood’s growing crypto ecosystem can continue attracting users and trading volume while Bitcoin itself navigates a difficult market environment.
With BTC still trading near $84,000, the $82,000 support area and a possible recovery above $87,500 remain key levels to watch.
