In a dramatic twist just as Bitcoin inches closer to a fresh all-time high, more than $1 billion worth of BTC has been moved from a long-dormant wallet tied to the “Satoshi era.”
Blockchain analytics platform Spot On Chain revealed that the wallet transferred 10,000 BTC valued at roughly $1.09 billion to a new address after lying untouched for over 14 years.
Records show the BTC was originally purchased on April 3, 2011, for just $109,246. That means the whale’s holdings have soared over 140,000 times in value, with an average purchase price of just $0.78 per coin.
While it’s unclear exactly why the owner decided to move such a huge stash, the timing is striking. Bitcoin is currently priced around $109,100, sitting less than 3% below its previous all-time high. Many analysts believe that new highs could be reached as soon as the end of this week.
Large movements like this often raise speculation about potential sell-offs, as big investors frequently shift funds from cold storage to exchanges when they plan to take profits.
Changing Whale Behavior Signals Market Maturity
Meanwhile, broader whale sentiment seems to be shifting. On-chain analytics firm Sentora reports that whales holding more than 1,000 BTC have been gradually reducing their balances in recent weeks.
While this trend could create some short-term selling pressure, Sentora’s analysts see it as a healthy development for Bitcoin’s long-term prospects.
“Rather than signaling weakness, this redistribution reflects a maturing market,” Sentora said in a statement. “Older ‘whale’ coins are dispersing, a dynamic that should ultimately strengthen Bitcoin’s long-term prospects.”
However, data from Glassnode offers another perspective. Its “Liveliness” metric which gauges whether BTC holders are spending or holding their coins has continued to decline. Unlike past cycles where investors eagerly locked in profits near record prices, many long-term holders appear content to keep their BTC even as prices hover near all-time highs.
Supporting this cautious conviction, the total amount of BTC held by long-term investors defined as those who’ve held for more than 155 days has reached a new record of 14.7 million coins.
Notably, much of the BTC bought during the surge toward $100,000 remains untouched, highlighting growing investor confidence and reduced speculative pressure in the market.
Institutions Double Down on Bitcoin Treasuries
While some long-term whales may be preparing to reposition their holdings, institutions are charging ahead with fresh investments in Bitcoin.
In the past week, several companies have unveiled bold plans to build or expand their Bitcoin treasuries:
- Fragbite Group saw its stock surge 64% after announcing plans to allocate a portion of its balance sheet to BTC.
- Vanadi Coffee shares soared over 240% in just one month after shareholders approved investing up to $1.1 billion into Bitcoin.
- Belgravia Hartford disclosed securing $1 million in new funding to grow its BTC reserves.
- Norway’s Green Minerals revealed intentions to raise $1.2 billion to bolster its Bitcoin holdings.
This rush from corporate players underscores Bitcoin’s growing appeal as a strategic reserve asset, especially as the price approaches new record territory.
Analysts remain bullish about the months ahead. Crypto trader CryptoFayz predicts that if Bitcoin surpasses its current all-time high of $111,960, it could quickly advance to $116,000, based on technical chart patterns.
Longer-term forecasts are even more ambitious. Standard Chartered and Bernstein both expect Bitcoin to reach $200,000 by the end of 2025, while BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes envisions an even loftier target of $250,000.
As the crypto world watches Bitcoin flirt with its next historic milestone, the reawakening of ancient coins and the influx of institutional money suggests the next chapter could be one for the record books.
