Crypto trader James Wynn is once again making waves in the market, barely a week after suffering one of the biggest single-trader losses in recent memory approximately $99.3 million. Despite the setback, Wynn is back in action, reportedly opening a fresh 945 BTC long position worth $99.7 million on the Hyperliquid platform with 40x leverage.
$1M Profit from HYPE Sale Before Jumping Back In
Before his latest bold move, Wynn sold 126,116 HYPE tokens for $4.12 million, locking in an estimated $1.05 million profit. According to on-chain data from Lookonchain, he had purchased the HYPE tokens earlier in May at an average price of $24.4, and offloaded them at $32.7. The win is noteworthy—but still a fraction of what he lost last week.
From Peak Gains to Major Wipeout
Wynn’s recent trading history has been both impressive and catastrophic. Between March 20 and May 23, he racked up $83 million in profits through leveraged plays, including:
- 10x long on PEPE with $23.8M in unrealized gains
- 10x long on TRUMP, netting $6.83M realized
- 5x long on FARTCOIN, realizing $4.48M
The biggest win in that stretch came from a $1.14 billion Bitcoin long that at one point was up $39 million.
But Wynn’s luck took a turn on May 24, when he increased that Bitcoin long to $1.25 billion. The market dipped almost immediately, slashing $13.4 million off his position. A desperate attempt to recover via a $1B BTC short on May 25 backfired and cost him another $15.87 million. By May 30, Bitcoin had dropped below $105K, triggering Wynn’s liquidation of 949 BTC, worth over $99.3 million.
The brutal sequence flipped Wynn’s performance from +$83 million to approximately -$12 million in just seven days.
Doubling Down Again: 945 BTC with 40x Leverage
Undeterred, Wynn has now opened a new 945 BTC long position at 40x leverage. With an initial margin of $2.17 million and a liquidation price of $104,577, Wynn has since added $400,000 more to raise his liquidation floor to $104,151 a hair’s breadth below current levels.
The risk is sky-high. Any small drop could once again wipe him out.
“I’m Being Hunted,” Wynn Says
Wynn believes he’s become a target in the eyes of market whales. In a post to his X (Twitter) followers, he suggested that his trades are being “hunted” by large players intent on liquidating highly leveraged positions on Hyperliquid, the platform he uses.
“The moment I entered my long, the insta hunted me. There is an agenda here and I don’t know what it is. It can’t be just my long,” Wynn wrote. “Maybe it’s because I’m a fish playing a whales game or maybe it’s because I’m bringing attention to Hyper Liquid.”
He ended his post with a plea for followers to buy Bitcoin, potentially in a bid to support his high-risk position.
Final Thoughts
Wynn’s latest move has reignited debates around risk management, market manipulation, and the role of leverage in crypto trading. Whether he’s a fearless trader or a cautionary tale in the making, James Wynn continues to capture the crypto world’s attention one high-stakes bet at a time.
