Ethereum price slipped back below the important $2,500 level after failing to hold a brief move above $2,600. The latest pullback has weakened short-term momentum and left ETH trading close to key support as traders prepare for two major U.S. market events.
At the time of analysis, ETH was trading near $2,475, down roughly 2% over the previous 24 hours.
Technical indicators point to weakening momentum, while nearby liquidation clusters suggest volatility could remain elevated. The Federal Reserve decision and the U.S. Senate’s CLARITY Act vote may also play an important role in determining Ethereum’s next move.
Ethereum price drops below $2,500
Ethereum traded near $2,475 on Sept. 15 after losing around 2% over the previous day.
The decline came shortly after ETH pushed above $2,600 but failed to maintain the breakout. Buyers were unable to hold the higher levels, and the price quickly reversed.
During the latest session, ETH opened around $2,515.72 and traded between approximately $2,465.60 and $2,520. The token was down about 1.65% at the time of writing.
The reversal has pushed Ethereum price below $2,500, bringing ETH back into the broader consolidation range that has shaped the market since late August.
The failed move above $2,600 also highlights how sensitive the market has become ahead of important U.S. macroeconomic and regulatory events.
Crypto trader Daan Crypto Trades described the recent volatility as traders repositioning ahead of the Senate’s CLARITY Act vote and the Federal Open Market Committee meeting.
The initial rally likely forced some leveraged short positions out of the market, while the sharp reversal subsequently pressured traders holding leveraged long positions.
This type of price action often appears when investors reduce risk ahead of major events that could affect market sentiment.
Ethereum tests key 4-hour support
Ethereum’s 4-hour chart shows ETH trading below the Bollinger Band midpoint near $2,509.64.
The lower Bollinger Band sits around $2,469.41, placing ETH very close to its first important short-term support level.
If Ethereum breaks below this area, the price could revisit recent intraday lows before testing the $2,450 zone.
On the upside, buyers would first need to recover the Bollinger Band midpoint around $2,510.
A stronger recovery could then bring the upper band at approximately $2,549.86 back into focus.
That makes the $2,550 region an especially important resistance level for Ethereum in the near term.
Weak ADX suggests Ethereum lacks a strong trend
The Average Directional Index currently stands at approximately 17.73.
ADX readings below 20 generally suggest that the market does not have a strong directional trend.
This means Ethereum could continue moving sideways even while short-term price swings remain sharp.
In other words, ETH is currently experiencing volatility without a clear longer-lasting trend.
The Relative Strength Index also suggests momentum is fading.
Ethereum’s daily RSI has fallen to approximately 56.89, below its moving average of 62.14.
The indicator remains above oversold territory, meaning there is still room for further downside if sellers continue to control the market.
Ethereum MACD turns bearish
One of the more important signals on the daily chart comes from the MACD indicator.
The daily MACD line remains positive at approximately 72.86, but it has dropped below the signal line at 90.93.
Meanwhile, the MACD histogram has moved into negative territory at around -18.07.
This suggests the bullish momentum that supported Ethereum’s August rally has weakened significantly.
A bearish MACD crossover does not guarantee a deeper correction, but it does increase the importance of nearby support levels.
If buyers fail to defend the $2,450 to $2,470 region, selling pressure could increase.
ETH liquidation clusters could amplify volatility
Ethereum’s liquidation heatmap shows significant leveraged positions concentrated near the current market price.
One major liquidity zone sits around $2,450 to $2,470.
Because ETH is already trading close to this area, a further decline could trigger additional long liquidations.
Forced liquidations can accelerate market moves because leveraged positions are automatically closed once certain price levels are reached.
Another large downside liquidity concentration appears between approximately $2,390 and $2,410.
If Ethereum loses the current support range, this area could become the next significant downside target.
However, liquidity is also building above the market.
Notable upside clusters are visible around $2,535 to $2,580, followed by stronger concentrations near $2,630 and $2,650.
A recovery above $2,550 could therefore trigger short liquidations and potentially support another move toward $2,600.
The liquidation map does not predict which direction Ethereum will move. Instead, it highlights areas where volatility could accelerate once the price reaches heavily leveraged positions.
$2,550 remains the key Ethereum resistance
Several technical indicators now point to $2,550 as the main near-term resistance level.
Crypto analyst Ted Pillows has also highlighted this level, suggesting Ethereum’s upside could remain limited until ETH reclaims $2,550 on a weekly basis.
A sustained move above this resistance would weaken the current bearish setup.
The next significant resistance could then appear around $2,600, followed by higher levels near $2,834 to $2,860.
On shorter timeframes, Ethereum would first need to recover $2,510 and then break through $2,550.
If that happens, bullish momentum could improve considerably.
On the downside, a close below approximately $2,465 would increase the risk of another move toward $2,450.
If sellers push below this area, $2,400 would become the next visible target.
Ethereum’s broader support remains near $2,254
On the daily chart, a key Fibonacci retracement level is positioned around $2,253.61.
This remains one of Ethereum’s more important structural support zones.
Although ETH is still trading well above this level, a deeper correction could eventually bring it into focus.
On the upside, the next major Fibonacci level stands near $2,833.75.
However, Ethereum would first need to recover the $2,550 to $2,600 area before traders could realistically focus on those higher targets.
Fed decision and CLARITY Act could drive the next ETH move
Technical indicators are not the only factors affecting Ethereum.
U.S. macroeconomic conditions could significantly influence the next move.
Rising oil prices and higher Treasury yields have increased concerns that inflation could remain elevated.
Higher bond yields can reduce demand for speculative assets because investors are able to earn stronger returns from lower-risk traditional investments.
The Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy decision therefore remains a major catalyst for Ethereum and the broader crypto market.
At the same time, the Senate’s procedural vote on the CLARITY Act introduces another source of uncertainty.
The legislation could influence expectations surrounding cryptocurrency regulation in the United States.
Until these events are resolved, Ethereum could remain vulnerable to sharp moves in either direction.
What comes next for Ethereum price?
Ethereum is currently sitting near an important technical area.
The immediate support zone lies between approximately $2,450 and $2,470, while the main short-term resistance remains around $2,550.
A decisive break below $2,450 could push ETH toward $2,400, followed by the stronger downside liquidity zone around $2,390.
A deeper correction could eventually bring the major daily support near $2,254 into focus.
On the other hand, recovering $2,510 would be an early sign of improving momentum.
A breakout above $2,550 would be more significant and could open the door for another attempt at $2,600.
If Ethereum eventually clears that region with stronger momentum, higher resistance near $2,834 to $2,860 could become relevant.
For now, bearish MACD momentum, weak trend strength and heavy liquidation zones leave ETH vulnerable to continued volatility.
The next decisive move above $2,550 or below $2,450 could provide a clearer signal about Ethereum’s short-term direction.
