Bitcoin just took a major step toward programmability. On Sept. 1, developer Best in Slot, working alongside BRC20’s pseudonymous creator Domo, announced the successful launch of BRC2.0 at block 912,690. The upgrade folds Ethereum’s Virtual Machine (EVM) into Bitcoin’s BRC20 token standard, effectively turning simple Bitcoin tokens into programmable assets.
What the Upgrade Does
Traditionally, BRC20 tokens have worked through indexers offchain systems that act like calculators, recording balances but offering little flexibility. With BRC2.0, those calculators have been replaced with a custom EVM execution engine, transforming indexers into full-fledged computers capable of running smart contracts.
In practice, this means developers can now inscribe and execute Turing-complete smart contract code on Bitcoin, bringing features once exclusive to Ethereum such as lending protocols, decentralized exchanges, and programmable tokens into Bitcoin’s ecosystem.
Why the EVM Matters
By adopting the EVM, BRC2.0 taps into the world’s most widely used smart contract framework. That gives Bitcoin token developers:
- Access to Solidity, the dominant language for smart contracts
- A vast library of open-source tools and code
- An existing global developer base, eliminating the need to build a new ecosystem from scratch
As Domo put it:
“The holy grail is combining the two gold standards: Bitcoin as the most decentralized and secure network, and the EVM as the most proven virtual machine. The aim is to give users the Ethereum experience of composability and programmability, but secured by Bitcoin.”
Early Adoption and Ecosystem Support
The upgrade is already seeing traction. UniSat Wallet, one of Bitcoin’s most widely used wallets, has integrated support for BRC2.0 into its extension wallet. That means users can now store, transfer, and manage programmable Bitcoin-based assets, an important first step in making the standard usable at scale.
Since the execution engine is open-source, other indexers can adopt it too helping prevent fragmentation and encouraging broader adoption across the Bitcoin ecosystem.
The Bigger Picture
BRC2.0 could mark a turning point in Bitcoin’s evolution. By combining Bitcoin’s unmatched security with Ethereum’s proven programmability, it opens the door for a new wave of decentralized applications built directly on Bitcoin. If adoption continues, Bitcoin could soon host lending platforms, DEXs, and more expanding far beyond its original role as “digital gold.”
