In a landmark move for digital asset security, blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs has unveiled the Beacon Network a collaborative, real-time crime response system designed to track and freeze stolen crypto funds before they can be laundered or cashed out.
Industry and Law Enforcement Unite
Announced on August 20, the Beacon Network brings together some of the biggest names in the industry, including Coinbase, Binance, Kraken, Robinhood, PayPal, Stripe, Ripple, Anchorage Digital, and Blockchain.com. These platforms will work alongside leading federal law enforcement agencies and security researchers to identify and stop illicit blockchain activity.
According to TRM Labs, the initiative represents the first end-to-end “kill chain” for crypto crime, shifting the industry’s approach from slow, isolated responses to instant, coordinated action.
“The goal is simple — stop stolen funds in their tracks before they reach fiat off-ramps,” TRM Labs explained.
How Beacon Network Works
The system operates on automated alerts and a shared intelligence database of flagged wallet addresses.
- When a suspicious wallet is identified by an investigator or vetted partner, the network instantly propagates that warning across all linked wallets.
- If those funds attempt to move into any participating exchange, an alert is triggered immediately, allowing the exchange to freeze the transaction before withdrawal.
- To prevent misuse, only vetted members such as law enforcement, regulated exchanges, and accredited security experts are allowed to flag wallets. Each flag must include strong evidence and a clear reason for action.
This real-time information sharing, TRM Labs says, could make it far harder for criminals to move stolen funds undetected.
Tested in the Field
The Beacon Network has already shown results during its testing phase.
- In one case, investigators flagged $1.5 million tied to a multi-national scam, which allowed a participating exchange to freeze the funds before they could be cashed out.
- In another instance, $800,000 in suspected scam deposits were intercepted before bad actors could withdraw.
The network targets a broad range of illicit activity from scams and frauds to state-backed hacks and terrorist financing. A major focus will be on dismantling North Korean hacking operations, which remain responsible for some of the largest crypto thefts globally.
Why It Matters: Billions at Stake
Crypto crime continues to rise at an alarming pace. In just the first half of 2025, over $2.1 billion in digital assets were stolen across 75 incidents.
The single largest incident was the $1.5 billion Bybit hack in February, attributed to North Korean groups, which involved more than 10,000 transactions in its first month alone.
TRM Labs has been laying the groundwork for Beacon since last year, when it partnered with Tether and TRON to launch the T3 Financial Crime Unit. That project focused on tracking illicit USDT flows on the TRON blockchain and has already helped freeze over $100 million in stolen assets.
Building Trust Back Into Crypto
Industry leaders hope Beacon Network will play a pivotal role in protecting users and restoring trust in digital assets.
“Safety and security are the foundational pillars of crypto, and it is the collective responsibility for those committed to the future of our sector to promote its integrity,” said Antonio Alvarez, Chief Compliance Officer at Crypto.com.
By combining the reach of major exchanges, the expertise of security researchers, and the authority of law enforcement, Beacon could represent a turning point in how the industry fights back against crypto crime.
